Sententious  (sen-TEN-shus) — from the Latin for “meaningful” — means excessively self-righteous; abounding in pithy aphorisms or maxims. Example (as used by George Packer in a New Yorker review of George W. Bush’s memoir, Decision Points): “Here’s a prediction: Decision Points will not endure. Its prose aims for tough-minded simplicity but keeps landing on simpleminded sententiousness.”
