As someone who has recently lost 30 lbs and counting and has always gotten a lot of exercise, let me say that the only one of the 7 rules that resonates with me is "pay attention." Calorie restriction and exercise basically don't work as a means of weight loss, or if they can be said to work, it's generally temporary. There is ample scientific evidence to support this conclusion! For many if not most people struggling with weight loss, the real secret is very simple: reduce your carbohydrate intake. Forget counting calories, and don't restrict fat, but keep the percentage of calories from carbohydrates down to around 20% or less. Exercise for health, but don't expect it to help you lose weight. For a review of 150 years or so of related research and public policy, I highly recommend Gary Taubes' book Good Calories, Bad Calories.
