New Interval Training Research

A shocking new interval training research study came in right as we were going to press this month and so I took time out of my busy weekend to break it down for you. Here’s the reference and you’ll see from the title that it’s a doozy:

Peake, J.M., et al. Metabolic and hormonal responses to isoenergetic high-intensity interval exercise and continuous moderate-intensity exercise. Am. J. Physiol. Endo. Metab. 307: E539-552, 2014.

Researchers studied 10 endurance-trained athletes after doing a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workout and a ‘work-matched moderate-intensity continuous exercise’ (MOD) workout. The interval training session burned 20% more carbohydrate and produced significantly higher blood lactate levels. This is not surprising. Growth hormone and cortisol were also higher after interval training.

What does this tell us?

It shows us that not all exercise is the same. There are big differences in the fat burning hormonal response to intervals & cardio. The boost in growth hormone from intervals might be the most important finding. It helps TT clients, like Adam here, burn belly fat. I estimate Adam’s body fat to be 8.5%. He is one of the most ripped TT Members.
