22 years. Wow. It’s hard to believe it’s been that long.

Most days I don’t even feel 22 years old (I certainly don’t act it, LOL). But that’s how long it’s been since I trained my first client, the boss of my summer job, for $20 cash.

I wasn’t even a certified trainer yet (that wouldn’t happen until 1996), but I knew my way around the weight room as well as anyone in town.

Heck, it’s been over 25 years since I first started lifting weights at the local YMCA at age 14, the same gym that I still stop by from time to time.

The gym has changed. Fifteen years ago it was moved out of the dungeon and up to the 2nd floor. It even has windows now, ha! Sunlight actually shines in. Gone are the ex-cons that used to bang the weights and leave 45 pound plates stacked on every piece of equipment. Women use the weight room now. Cute old grandmas, some of them 70 years of age or older.

The gym is a different world these days. I guess I’m the only constant, and the basics that I do that work so well, like my Big 5 exercises.

  • Squat
  • Push
  • Pull
  • Single-Leg
  • Total Body Ab Movement

You can make an incredible bodyweight challenge circuit with those doing as many repetitions as possible in one minute for each:
The “5-Rocks” Bodyweight Challenge”

1) Prisoner Squats
2) Decline or Regular Pushups
3) Pullups or Bodyweight Rows
4) Bulgarian Split Squats or Regular Split Squats (60 seconds per side)
5) Cross-Body Mountain Climbers
– Rest 1 minute and repeat up to 2 more times.
Awesome, right?

Those movements are my Rocks.

Just as I am your Rock, too.

You see, we all need “Rocks” in our life.

We need things and people that we can count on to be there everyday, providing the stability, love, and support we need in our ever increasingly stressful and demanding lives.
