“Craig… You’ll never believe what just happened”.
My client Adrian Delorey, founder of 180DegreeFitness, sounded like he’d just purchased winning lottery tickets.
“What’s up?” I responded.
“You remember that one month surfing trip I told you about?”
“Well,” he continued, “I just got back and found out that my business more than DOUBLED while I was away!”
Although I love hearing about my client’s business and financial successes, nothing excites me more than stories like these.
I absolutely LOVE helping people create more freedom in their lives and achieve true fulfillment while growing their businesses and earning more.
But when I first met Adrian nearly a decade ago, he was struggling to make ends meet and barely surviving… let alone thriving.
With less than $400 in his business bank account and more expenses than he could handle, he was on the fast track to bankruptcy and knew that he needed help.
After joining my mastermind, Adrian and I set to work building a plan for his life and business so that he could earn more, work less, and finally live the life that he’d been dreaming of for so many years.
And today, I couldn’t be more proud of the results that he’s achieved.
In a few short years, Adrian has created explosive growth in his business, scaling to almost $600,000 in annual revenue all while working less and living more.
I recently had my Editor sit down with Adrian to discuss how he did it and what he learned along the way.
Here are just a few of the many amazing lessons he shared.
1. Create More Structure in Your Life and Fall in Love with the Word “No”
Most people believe the lie that freedom and discipline are mutually exclusive.
But nothing could be further from the truth.
In order to live your Perfect Life and achieve those big goals you’ve set for yourself, you must create more structure and follow more rules about how you’ll spend your time.
When you have hard and fast rules in place about what you will and will not allow in your life, you achieve the freedom to go after your most important priorities and goals with laser like focus.
And when I first started working with Adrian, this was the first thing we addressed.
Unlike many entrepreneurs, Adrian’s problem was not that he was wasting time on frivolous activities, allowing himself to get distracted with social media, or partying like it was 1999.
His problem was that he struggled to say “No”.
He would take any and every opportunity that presented itself, wasting countless hours with leads he could never convert and projects that would never pay off.
When we sat down together, I had him write down ALL of the activities that directly drove new revenue to his business. Then I had him write down all of the distractions and “shiny objects” with which he was faced on a weekly basis.
We then created a concrete action plan to help him double down on his profit centers while eliminating his distractions.
And the results speak for themselves.
To achieve lasting success in your life and business you must learn how to prioritize your time and say “no” to the things that don’t serve you.
- Say “No” to those low paying clients and time vampires who suck away at your time and energy.
- Say “No” to and delegate all of the activities outside of your area of genius
- Say “No” to every opportunity that doesn’t match your values and create REAL progress in your life and business.
Create stronger boundaries around your communication and refuse to respond to email or text messages during periods of important deep work.
Set personal rules for yourself about how long you will work, what tasks you will and will not handle (a NOT to do list/not my job list are great for this), and what commitments you will allow yourself to make.
By ruthlessly hacking away at the things that don’t serve you at the highest level, you will create more freedom in your life and allow yourself to have a greater impact on the people around you.
Treat distractions like drugs and “Just say no!”
2. Get Out of Your Comfort Zone and Go Bigger
Success begins where your comfort zone ends.
It is, quite literally, impossible to achieve the success you desire by sticking to the same patterns and behaviors that are comfortable today.
Throughout the many years that Adrian and I have worked together, I’ve constantly challenged him (as my mentors have challenged me) to push to the edge of his comfort zone.
From writing his new book, publishing videos on social media, and setting stricter boundaries around how he handled his time and business, ALL of his greatest growth came from going to the edge of his comfort zone and taking that bold leap forward.
And the same is true for you.
If you want to breakthrough your plateaus and achieve the success you desire, then you must push yourself to break out of your comfort zone.
Do something that scares you every week.
If being on video terrifies you, good! Pull out your phone and record a 60-second Instagram video everyday for the next 30 days.
If selling on the phone freaks you out, great! Schedule as many calls as you possibly can over the next week until you overcome your fear.
Whatever it is that scares you and makes you a little bit uncomfortable, use that as a guide to help you achieve your perfect life.
Remember, everything that you want out of life lies on the other side of your comfort zone.
Think of 1-2 things that you’ve been putting off in your business or personal life because they are uncomfortable.
Maybe you need to have a hard conversation with your spouse. Maybe you need to launch that product you’ve been sitting on for months. Maybe you need to raise your rates with your existing coaching clients.
Whatever it is, I want you to commit to getting out of your comfort zone and taking that difficult action in the next 24 hours.
I promise, the rewards are worth it.
3. Environment is Destiny
Nothing is more important to your success and fulfillment than the people with whom you surround yourself with and the environments in which you spend your time.
As my friend and client Jason Capital says, “Environment IS destiny”.
As a member of my Unstoppable Mastermind, Adrian experienced the importance of environment first hand.
The people, resources, and ideas to which he had access allowed him to rapidly scale his business and tap into previously impossible levels of productivity and efficiency.
If you want to take your life to the next level and achieve your biggest goals in 2019, then you must put yourself in an inspiring environment with people who push you to go bigger.
As Jim Rohn says, “You are the average of the five people whom you surround yourself with most”.
Right now, I want you to pull out a piece of paper and a pen and answer the following questions…
- Who do I need to connect with this year in order to achieve my big goals and expedite my path to success?
- What coaches, seminars, and masterminds do I need to invest in to 10x my life and achieve my dreams?
- Who am I spending time with on a regular basis that I need to eliminate (or reduce) from my life?
When your environment is optimized for success, everything else becomes easy.
With the right team of mentors, coaches, and friends around you, it is all but impossible to fail and I can promise you that you will achieve your Perfect Life.
4. Consistency is the Only Straight Line to Success
Unlike many of my clients, Adrian’s big breakthrough didn’t happen in 12 weeks or even 12 months.
It took years of hard work, patience, and pain before he was finally able to pull himself up by the bootstraps and achieve the success he enjoys today.
But unlike so many “wantrepreneurs” and people who talk about wanting success, Adrian knew that long term consistency was simply the price that had to be paid to live the life he wanted.
He didn’t get discouraged whenever setbacks happened and obstacles arose.
He didn’t throw in the towel at the first sign of trouble or quit when things got hard.
He persisted through the good times and the bad and stayed consistent in his determination until he achieved his goals.
In order to live the life you want to live and achieve your biggest goals and dreams, you must do the same thing.
Success is not a game that is played in weeks or months, but in years (I would even argue decades).
You must commit to consistently practicing the fundamentals and doing the work necessary to achieve your goals.
It might take you 6 months to achieve your big breakthrough, it might take you 6 years.
The amount of time doesn’t matter.
All that matters is that you show up every single day and put one foot in front of the other, consistently taking the right actions and implementing the right habits until you achieve what you want.
5. Trust Yourself and Go With Your Gut
Whenever Adrian was facing the hardest times of his life with bankruptcy seeming all but certain and the failure of his business coming closer and closer to reality, nearly everyone in his life told him to abandon ship.
They told him that he’d done a good job but that he didn’t really need to be an entrepreneur. That he should just go back to the corporate world and get a job like everyone else.
But he trusted his gut.
He knew that he could make his business work and he was willing to do whatever it took to achieve his dreams.
As a result, he’s making more money than he ever dreamed possible and truly living his Perfect Life.
On your own journey, there will be times where the people you love and respect the most will tell you to go against your values and do something that you know is not right for you.
And it’s these tiny moments of decision that will determine your entire future.
Will you cave into the pressure of your friends and family? Or will you stick to your values and keep going even when no one else understands?
If you are willing to trust yourself and keep going even when the obstacles in your path seem impossible, I promise that you will achieve the life you’ve always desired.
Stay strong. Stay the course. And never, ever, ever, give up on what’s most important to you.
