Read if You Are Stressed or Overwhelmed

One in five Americans suffers from anxiety.

I know how painful it can be.

Back in 2006 I had such severe anxiety that it sent me to the emergency room twice.

I thought I was having a heart attack.

It was the lowest point of my life.

So I tried everything to ‘cure’ it.

Yoga, Qi Gong, Meditation, you name it.

bally-011I even bought a dog because I read that petting a puppy helped decrease stress.

(However, ol’ Bally the Dog was such a handful that he only increased my anxiety, ha!)

Fortunately, after a few months I was able to overcome the anxiety and get back to my old self.

Thanks to today’s lesson, I no longer suffer from panic or anxiety.

One thing that really helped me was learning how to breathe properly.

I know that sounds silly.

I thought I was an expert at breathing, after all, I’d been doing it for 30 years!

“How the heck do you not know how to breathe?” you’re thinking.

Well, it turns out a LOT of people are doing it wrong.

According to the NY Times…

“Most people are ‘vertical’ breathers, meaning your shoulders move upward when you inhale. Second, you breathe from you upper chest, where the lungs don’t have much presence.

“The right way to breathe: horizontally and from the middle of the body, where the diaphragm is.

“You should expand your belly while inhaling through your nose, she said, and squeeze your belly inward while exhaling.”

Here’s what I do when I’m stressed… it works like magic to reduce anxiety:

  • Take a big breath in through my nose to fill up my belly.
  • Inhale for 4-6 seconds.
  • Hold that breath in your belly for 3-4 seconds.
  • Exhale slowly for 6-10 seconds… breathe all that air out through your mouth
  • Repeat for 1-2 minutes

It’s so simple but you’ll feel the weight of the world lift off your shoulders.
