Hey, can you answer this? How is it possible to stand beside a box of scrumptious cupcakes and a tray of delicious chocolate chip cookies – with a growling stomach – and still be able to overcome temptation?
The secret is in having Diet Rules. I went through that exact situation last week while I was working at our office in sunny downtown Denver. One of our superstar team members just learned she’s having a baby boy, so she brought in the treats to celebrate. They were placed on the stand-up desk that I used to write this email.
It was around 3pm and I was starting to get hungry. Patrick, the producer of our fitness videos, grabbed a vanilla cupcake with blue frosting. Gary, one of our writers, walked by to pick up a soft-and-chewy cookie. But I held out. Here’s why…
I have 3 diet rules: 1) I do not eat dairy. 2) I do not eat grains. 3) I do not have more than 2 alcohol drinks in one sitting. Of course, I wasn’t drinking at the office, so I didn’t need to rely on Rule #3. But because of Rules 1 & 2, I wasn’t tempted at all by the baked goods.
Those rules are in place for my digestive health. Without going into too much detail, if I break those Rules 1 or 2 (and I sometimes do when I break Rule #3), then I get bloated and my regularity gets messed up. That’s why I’ve made my plan and I stick to it.
You don’t need to have the same rules as me. In fact, you can have cupcakes on your diet and still lose weight.
According to my friend and nutrition expert John Rowley, when you eat these foods is far more important than if you eat them. “You can eat just about any food you want and lose weight,” says Rowley. “You can avoid The Weigh Gain Reaction simply by eating foods at specific times.”
To prove his point, Rowley takes his clients’ diets and simply “rearranges the foods.” He even allows them “forbidden foods”, just eaten at specific times during the day.
“They eat the same foods, but lose twice, even three times the weight,” says Rowley. “They can also eat foods normally forbidden on diets and still lose weight.”
Just goes to show you what you can learn when you’re willing to listen.

PS – Want to know another KEY for weight loss?
Social support is a key to success. However, just as important as getting positive support is removing the negative influences in your life.
This may be painful. You might not want to give up hanging out with lazy friends that eat junk all the time, but if it is killing you and making you broke, unhealthy, and unhappy, it MUST stop.
Same with work friends. If all they do is sit round and complain, then you must remove yourself from that environment whenever possible.
Stay strong if you want to make this a lifelong change.
