What You Need to Know Today: December 11

Good afternoon, Early Risers!

Here’s what you need to know

MITs new Minority Report-like app lets you program any object. Imagine it’s 4:59 p.m. You’re one minute away from starting your weekend. You’ve mentally checked-out, now it’s a matter of physically checking-out of the office. But what if you didn’t have to do anything but close your laptop, grab your coat, and walk out the door… As you leave the building, your desk lamp automatically shuts off, your chair resets to its original position, your car engine starts by itself and navigates its way to the front door. What I’m describing here is no fantasy. MIT researchers have designed a new app called Reality Editor that will do all this for you automatically. With a connect-the-dot-like interface, you can program any smart object with your fingertips.

The apps people check first in the morning. When you open your web browser, what’s the first thing you start typing? For me, it’s “fac…” and then I click the autofill facebook.com. The truth is I don’t even want to check facebook, but it’s become such a habit that my fingers start typing before my brain says stop. Turns out most of the world can relate.

+ If you use Google’s Inbox app, then consider this desktop app for mac that doesn’t suck.

CAREER

#1 key to success online from the world’s best email marketer. Last weekend, I had the opportunity to hangout with the world’s best email marketer at our Toys for Tots event in Denver. I can tell you that within the first few minutes of listening to this man speak, I knew he was the real deal. ETR Editor Craig Ballantyne wrote a great article summarizing how this young man went from zero sales online, to making $423,731 in 6 weeks. This is advice you won’t find anywhere else. Take note!

Why you should stop trying to be like Steve Jobs. Are you turning into your dad? If your dad dances anything like Steve Ballmer, maybe you should embrace it.

LIFESTYLE

“Break out the red panties. We’re rich, baby.” If Conor McGregor beats Jose Aldo in UFC 194 tomorrow night, the Las Vegas strip will burn to the ground. If you don’t watch UFC, you can still appreciate the self-promotion that goes into these highly-anticipated contests. And the man you’re about to see fight tomorrow is one of the best. The Wall Street Journal has even compared his mental-warfare tactics to the great Muhammad Ali. Here’s everything you need to know before tomorrow’s fight. Believe the hype.

Photobomb of the year? This family’s Christmas card just got a lot cuter.

The Myth Behind Hemingway’s Favorite Drink

According to myth, Ernest Hemingway’s favorite drink was the Mojito, which he drank often at one of his favorite bars, La Bodeguita del Medio, in Havana, Cuba. Yet, aside from a handwritten quote on the wall at La Bodeguita, there exists no evidence that Hemingway ever drank Mojitos, or that he ever set foot in the joint. As for that inscription, it looks a lot like Hemingway’s handwriting, and it plainly says“My mojito in La Bodeguita, My daiquiri in El Floridita.” So this is proof, right? Wrong. It’s a forgery.
