“There’s a lot of money being made in marketing information products online today.”
- Bob Bly
The World’s Craziest Online Business Model
“Bill” – an old friend of mine – invited me to dinner to pick my brain about doing business online. (He knows that I’ve been making my living online for several years now.) He explained that he’s been trying to make some extra money by selling “stuff” on eBay. And the more he told me about it, the crazier it sounded.
He buys products in bulk and stores them at home. And every time he makes a sale, he has to pack up the goods and go to the post office to ship them out. Oh, and I should also mention that these products have a very low profit margin.
Now I don’t know about you, but to me that seems like an awful lot of work just to make a few dollars. And the business model isn’t scalable. If Bill wants to double his income, it’s going to take double the amount of work. If he wants to increase his income by a factor of 10, it’ll take 10 times the inventory, 10 times the labor to pack and ship the products, and 10 times the risk.
If you think that sounds a lot like a traditional “bricks and mortar” business, you’re right! As a matter of fact, the only differences I can see are that the actual sales are made online and he doesn’t have a physical storefront.
So then I told Bill a little about my online businesses.
I sell mostly digital information products, so I don’t need to buy or store any inventory. When I make a sale, the product is instantly delivered online. In many cases, I don’t even own the products I’m selling, so it’s completely hands off. On top of that, because the cost of storing and producing digital products is so low, they have extremely high profit margins. Best of all, the products I choose to sell are in high demand markets – so I’m not hoping sales will be made, I know they will.
Needless to say, Bill wanted to know more. So I shared with him what I’m about to share with you right now: my top three proven ways to make money online.
1. Context-Specific Website Advertising
Can you attract steady streams of visitors to your unique, information-rich website or blog? Great! Then sign up with an online advertising program that pays you for showing their context-specific ads on your site. This “pay-per click” model of revenue generation is probably the quickest way for you to start making money online.
Your “work” consists of adding a small piece of code to your Web page (anyone can do it!) that triggers ads relevant to your audience. For example, if your site is devoted to yoga exercises, yoga-related ads will appear. Then, whenever one of your site visitors clicks on one of those ads, you get paid. (This is a very simplified explanation of the process, but it gives you an idea of how it works.)
Although there are almost 100 recognized advertising programs available for Web publishers, the most popular by far is Google AdSense. It has the largest network of partners and is at the forefront of contextual advertising for websites, mobile technologies, search engines, and syndicated feeds.
2. Selling Other People’s Information Products (Affiliate Marketing)
Affiliate marketing is another good way to make money online. In particular, consider selling other people’s digital products (e-books, software, video courses, etc.).
Here are some of the reasons I love affiliate marketing:
- Commissions are high – often 50-75 percent for both new and established digital products.
- Product owners offer built-in marketing support (e.g., sales letters and banner ads that you can use).
- Product delivery, customer service, and payment processing are handled by the product owners.
To get started, sign up with a popular digital marketplace like ClickBank or Commission Junction and search their database for products that are related to your niche. Then promote these products on your website in the form of “product reviews” or “recommended resources.”
3. Creating and Selling Your Own Information Products
Many people are happy just with the consistent income they can make as an affiliate marketer. Eventually, though, you may want to create and sell your own information products – and have your own affiliate “army” to promote them.
There are many ways to create information products. You can write reports, do teleseminars with experts, and record video presentations, just to name a few.
What does it take to create an information product that sells? One good way is to do some research to find the kind of questions people in your niche are asking. You can then write an e-book that offers solutions to those problems. You may even want to give away your best solution to the biggest problem for free to build your e-mail list – and then sell the complete e-book to the people on that list.
As you sharpen your skills and establish your online reputation, you can build out your product funnel with e-courses, teleseminars, and even full-fledged home study programs.
Most of my online businesses generate income with a combination of these three proven methods: context-specific advertising, affiliate marketing, and information product creation. I also generate income from speaking, membership sites, and several other sources. However, when you are just getting started, my advice is to concentrate on the top three.
If you’re unsure of where to begin, I highly recommend that you join me and the ETR team at our “Show Me the Money” Info Marketing Bootcamp in November.

Advice From a 97-Year-Old Champion
By Matt Furey
“If you’re not making mistakes, then you’re not doing anything.”
So said John Wooden, the Hall of Fame basketball coach for UCLA who won a record 10 NCAA championships.
So many people do everything they can to avoid making mistakes – yet mistakes are the corrective feedback we need to help us reach our goals. Better to take action and correct mistakes while you’re in motion than to sit idle trying to figure out how not to make a wrong move.
It’s like driving a car. You must always have your hands on the wheel so you can make minor adjustments. You must continually modify and correct your course based upon ongoing feedback.
When you make a mistake and someone points it out to you, don’t say “I’m sorry.” The correct response is: “Thank you for telling me that. I’ll work on it.”
People who see feedback as helpful are grateful to learn what is steering them away from their goals. It may be tough to listen and be open to change – but it’s what the best of the best do.
Yes, you have the option to agree or disagree with the feedback – and you’ll become better at discerning what is helpful and what isn’t the more you practice listening to it. But you’ll never get anywhere if you view mistakes as negative and feedback as undesirable.
My best students LOVE getting my advice – even, as they would say, “raked over the coals.” They beg me to show them their mistakes.
Keep all of this in mind as you go through your day today. Mistakes are nothing to fear. Nor is the feedback that will help you improve.

Worth Quoting: Alex Mandossian on the Business of Every Business
“Do you feel your business is an information marketing business?
“Here are four questions for you to consider:
“Q1: Do you own a business card?
“Q2: Do you have a website or blog?
“Q3: Do you maintain voice mail?
“Q4: Do you send thank you letters?
“If you answered ‘YES’ to any of the 4 questions listed above, then your business is an info marketing business.
“Granted, you may not ‘market information’ for a profit, but you utilize information to market your business.
“Wouldn’t you agree?”

The Backyard Detox
Last week, I was leafing through a natural health publication and couldn’t help but notice that detox foot pads, hydrotherapy, cleansing greens, and detox elixirs filled the majority of the ad spaces.
It’s true that our bodies are exposed to more toxins now than ever. And we do need to be aware of this fact. But drastic, costly methods for detoxing aren’t necessary (or even proven).
Effective detoxification may be as close as your backyard.
Research published in Trends in Endocrinology and Metabolism showed that vitamin D can help increase intracellular levels of the master antioxidant and detoxifier glutathione. In fact, vitamin D is such a powerful detoxifier that the researchers found it even helped escort mercury out of the body. This is especially impressive because mercury is a dangerous heavy metal that’s notorious for being hard to remove.
Unfortunately, more than 50 percent of us are deficient in this essential “D”-toxifying nutrient. To kick up your natural cleansing system, aim for 15-30 minutes of sunlight, 3-5 days a week, or take 2,000-5,000 IU of vitamin D daily.
[Ed Note: Did you know that there's a hidden ingredient in some carb-rich foods that reduces your body's production of glutathione? Learn where it's found and how to avoid it in Kelley Herring's new book series Your Plate, Your Fate.]
It’s Fun to Know: Your Best Chance to Get a Lost Wallet Returned
From the annals of unnecessary scientific research and “that’s quite a reach” conclusions…
University of Edinburgh psychologists have determined that you stand the best chance of getting back a lost wallet if there’s a picture of a baby in it. They “planted” 240 wallets on highly trafficked city streets, and were pleasantly surprised to find that almost half of them were returned. Even more surprising, the rate of return appeared to be connected to the photos the researchers had inserted in the wallets. Eighty-eight percent of those with a photo of a baby were returned. Fifty-three percent of those with a photo of a puppy were returned. Forty-eight percent of those with a photo of a happy family were returned. Twenty-eight percent of those with a photo of an elderly couple were returned. And only 15 percent of the wallets with no photos at all were returned.
The researchers believe the overwhelming response to the photos of the baby reflects a compassionate instinct toward helpless infants that evolved in humans to ensure the survival of future generations. (Right!)

Word to the Wise: Quietus
“Quietus” (kwy-EE-tus) – from the Latin for “he is at rest” – is a release from life; a final discharge of an obligation or debt.
Example (as used by William Shakespeare in Hamlet’s “To be, or not to be” soliloquy): “For who would bear the whips and scorns of time, / The oppressor’s wrong, / the proud man’s contumely [contempt], / The pangs of despised love, the law’s delay, / The insolence of office and the spurns / That patient merit of the unworthy takes, / When he himself might his quietus make / With a bare bodkin [dagger]?”

Re: Matt Fury’s “Advice From a 97-Year-Old Champion”
Hi Matt,
Your advice is really timely. This week, I received feedback from a trusted adviser about a mistake that I made. It was tough to swallow and my ego felt a little bruised until I realized that she was right. Her feedback saved me countless hours of wasted time and effort. Anyone who wants to accomplish great things needs to learn the lesson in your article.
Thanks.
