How to Break the Beliefs That Keep You Stuck

Learn to Overcome The Lie of “I’m Just Wired This Way”
There’s a phrase I’ve heard way too many times from entrepreneurs: “That’s just how I am.”
It comes in different forms:
- “I’ve always been this way.”
- “I’m just not a structured person.”
- “I have ADHD, so I struggle with that.”
- “I’m always late—I’ve just accepted it.”
Let me ask you something…
If someone always says they’re late… Do you think they’ll ever be on time?
Of course not. Because the identity comes before the behavior.
That’s the trap.
Most people are so committed to the story of who they are that they never give themselves permission to become someone different.
I’m not talking about faking it. I’m not talking about pretending.
I’m talking about transformation, the kind that starts with burning down the belief that you are stuck as you are.
My Wake-Up Call
For most of my life, I prided myself on being the guy who could thrive in chaos.
Last-minute deadlines? I’ll pull it off.
Overscheduled calendar? I’ll muscle through.
Back-to-back crises? I’ll find a way.
It felt impressive… for a while.
But deep down, I was always behind.
Always chasing.
Always apologizing for being late, forgetting things, or missing opportunities.
And every time I got called out, I’d shrug and say:
“I’m just wired this way. I’ve got ADHD. I can’t help it.”
But one day, a coach said to me,
“Galel, what if you’re not broken? What if you’ve just built your business around dysfunction, and you’re calling it personality?”
That hit me like a gut punch.
Because he was right. I wasn’t doomed to chaos. I had just spent years modeling a way of living that matched my limiting belief.
Beliefs Are Not Facts
Let’s clear this up right now: A belief is not a fact.
A belief is just a thought you’ve rehearsed so many times it feels like truth.
Beliefs like:
- “I’m not a morning person.”
- “I always procrastinate.”
- “I’m not detail-oriented.”
- “I don’t follow through.”
- “I’m the creative type, not the structured one.”
Every single one of those is a belief you learned. And anything learned can be unlearned.
What we fail to realize is that we’re constantly modeling behavior, not just from the people around us, but from our own repeated internal stories.
So if you grew up around chaos? You’ll model chaos.
If you were praised for being “the funny one” or “the creative one,” you’ll double down on that identity and neglect other skills.
You’re not “just wired that way.” You’re trained that way.
And what’s been trained… can be retrained.
Stop Diagnosing. Start Designing.
One of the most dangerous things I see in high performers, especially those with ADHD, anxiety, or other labels, is that we use our diagnosis as a permission slip.
Now, don’t get me wrong.
ADHD is real. Trauma is real. Neurodivergence is real.
I’m not denying that.
But here’s what I am saying: If you keep telling yourself “I have [insert label], so I can’t [insert responsibility]”… you’re choosing to live in a cage with an open door.
Labels can help explain your patterns.
But they should never be used to excuse your inaction.
At some point, you’ve got to stop diagnosing yourself and start designing yourself.
Because the game isn’t “how do I cope with this forever?”
The game is “how do I build a life that works with how I’m wired, without letting it define me?”
Identity-First Transformation
If you want to change your behavior, don’t start with your calendar.
Start with your identity.
Because the question isn’t “What should I do?” It’s “Who would I be if I believed something different?”
Here’s what that looked like for me:
Old belief: “I’m not a systems guy.”
New belief: “I build simple systems because my brain needs clarity.”
Old belief: “I always run late.”
New belief: “I respect my time and the time of others.”
Old belief: “I work best under pressure.”
New belief: “I work best when I’m calm, clear, and in control.”
You don’t white-knuckle your way into these beliefs. You practice them. You model them.
You start showing up, even when it’s uncomfortable, as the kind of person who believes something better.
And over time, your brain catches up.
The Tools Only Work If You Change the Operator
I’ve coached enough entrepreneurs to know this: Most people don’t have a strategy problem. They have an identity problem.
They buy the planner.
They hire the coach.
They download the time-blocking template.
They install the new CRM.
But nothing sticks.
Not because the tool is broken, but because the operator is still trying to be productive while clinging to an identity that says, “I’m someone who doesn’t follow through.”
If you see yourself as chaotic, you’ll find a way to turn every system into chaos.
If you see yourself as inconsistent, you’ll bail the moment things get too predictable.
Your identity has to shift before the strategy can stick.
Here’s the Real Flex
You want to know what’s actually impressive?
It’s not building a million-dollar business while living in burnout.
It’s not “pushing through” and “grinding it out” and “hustling harder.”
The real flex?
Being calm.
Being consistent.
Being early.
Being free.
Not because you forced it, but because you trained for it.
You chose to believe in something better. You modeled the behavior until it became your new baseline. And now you operate from peace instead of pressure.
That’s sovereignty. And it’s available to anyone who’s willing to stop hiding behind their past self.
Final Thought
If you’ve built your life around the belief that “this is just how I am”… That’s not self-awareness. It’s self-sabotage in disguise.
You are not broken.
You are not behind.
You are not doomed to chaos.
You’re just modeling an outdated version of yourself, and it’s time to upgrade.
Let people be shocked when you show up early. Let them wonder how you suddenly became the calm one. Let them ask how you’re getting more done in less time.
You won’t need to explain it.
You’ll just live it.
