Creating A Safe Haven

Dear Early to Rise Reader, We’ve been talking a good deal lately about America’s war on terrorism, the economic slowdown, and the tough times ahead. We’ve talked about how you can survive and prosper in the future. I’ve been doing all these things myself. But I’ve also been doing something else — I’ve been building a safe haven for me and my family on a beautiful hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean in a remote and pristine part of Central America.

We all want a place to disappear to, a safe and secure bit of paradise where we can kick back and get away from our troubles. I’m on the verge of having such a place of my own. I’m writing this letter to encourage you — if you haven’t already begun — to start working on your little hunk of paradise. You will be amazed — once you look into it — how easy and inexpensive it is to have your own property overseas. You may be pleasantly shocked to learn how inexpensively you can live — and how comfortably at that — by finding yourself a second home or retirement property.

To get you thinking along these lines — and to provide you with all the facts and figures — I want to introduce you to a client of mine that has been publishing authoritative articles on this subject for more than 20 years. International Living is written by a group of smart, experienced travelers who have devoted themselves to locating these great second-income and retirement destinations long before the rest of the world finds out about them.

Twenty years ago, International Living’s experts were recommending Mexico. Ten years ago, they were in Costa Rica. Eight years ago, they were in Belize and Honduras. They find the greatest spots way, way before Conde Nast and the rest of the mainstream travel publications. They get the goods when the goods are still cheap. In the early 1980s, for example, International Living told readers to buy in Costa Rica, where, at the time, you could have bought a two-bedroom house for $19,500.

Today, that house would cost you $250,000. In 1987, International Living advised readers to look at Acapulco, where a quarter-acre lot on the beach was selling for $950. Today, a beachfront lot in Acapulco would cost you $75,000 to $100,000 … if you could find one to buy. International Living has reported over the past two decades on the world’s best real estate investment opportunities … years before anyone else has caught on. Spain’s Costa del Sol … Ambergris Cay in Belize … Dublin in Ireland … and, more recently, the south Pacific coast of Nicaragua (where real estate prices have increased on average 25% in the past few years) … and the Costa Maya in Mexico (where prices have risen by 30% in some cases in the past year alone). Can’t say the same for U.S. stock markets right now.

But International Living isn’t only about real estate. International Living can also tell you about places that have some of the most advantageous tax laws in the world … solid, secure countries with strong traditions in bank privacy … places where bank secrecy is part of their constitution. International Living can also tell you about the world’s best places to stay, to dine, to visit … Both International Living’s founding and current publishers, Bill Bonnerand Kathleen Peddicord, respectively, have followed their own advice, Bill having moved to France … Kathleen to the southeast coast of Ireland.

They’re both now raising their families in safe environments and enjoying lifestyles increasingly uncommon in the States. These are good, smart, resourceful people. And they have a really terrific newsletter. I get it and love it. I believe you, too, will enjoy their newsletter as much as I do … and will greatly benefit from its advice, insights, and recommendations.

[Ed. Note.  Mark Morgan Ford was the creator of Early To Rise. In 2011, Mark retired from ETR and now writes the Palm Beach Letter. His advice, in our opinion, continues to get better and better with every essay, particularly in the controversial ones we have shared today. We encourage you to read everything you can that has been written by Mark.]
