Today’s Words That Work: Ineffable
Archives: Word to the Wise
Something that’s Ineffable (in-EF-uh-bul) — from the Latin for “to utter” — is incapable of being expressed or described in words.
Example (as used by David Denby in a review of the film “Where the Wild Things Are”: “Max arrives at a mysterious island, and [director Spike] Jonze, recreating the monsters that live there, stays close to [Maurice] Sendak’s ineffably goofy style.”
