Peroration
Archives: Word to the Wise
A “peroration” – from the Latin for “to speak” – is the conclusion of an oration, especially a final summing up and re-enforcement of an argument.
Example (as used by Anthony Giardina in The New York Times): “In 2000, as president of the N.R.A., [Charlton Heston] delivered the peroration: ‘I’ll give you my gun when you take it from my cold, dead hands.’”
