Shopping Like a Marketing Professional

Friday, October 17th, 2008

Did you ever wonder why supermarkets advertise all those BOGO (buy one, get one) offers? Maybe you don’t care. If you can use two five-pound bags of potatoes or two jumbo packs of chicken legs (common supermarket BOGOs), you go for it. Or maybe you go for it even if you have to give some of that food away… just because it’s such a good deal.

Well, if you’ve been reading the marketing articles we publish in ETR, my guess is that you look at the BOGO in a different way. Because even if you’re not a marketer, you’ve been developing a marketer’s mindset. So you understand what’s at work here. You know that the BOGO is designed to attract people with big families – the kind of people who are likely to drop well over $100 every time they go grocery shopping… and have the potential to become the store’s most profitable customers.

Retailers refer to such deals as “loss leaders,” because the merchandise is often sold at a loss in order to bring in new customers and beef up sales. (Though sometimes the retailer is able to get “specials” from their suppliers so they can at least break even.)

The loss-leader tactic is used by online marketers, too. And you’ve read about it many times in ETR. We refer to it as a “front-end” promotion. Here’s an example…

I went to the Orvis website to find a gift for Craig, my fly-fishing-fan son-in-law… and right there on the homepage was an offer I couldn’t refuse: $45 worth of flies in a nice case for only $10. Including free shipping. Click! It went right into my shopping cart. Did Orvis lose money on me? Nope. Because I didn’t stop there. I kept on shopping, and ended up going a little over budget on Craig’s gift. Plus, they now have my e-mail address, so they can keep on sending me “back-end” offers for more stuff they can make a profit on.

Here’s another example…

My brother called and told me to check out Nueske’s website. “They’ve got an unbelievable special,” he said. “Two smoked duck breasts for $9.99 – with free shipping.” Wow! Their duck breasts usually go for $14.99. Not only that, but shipping on any perishable item is high – a minimum of $7.95 at Nueske’s – because it has to go in a Styrofoam container with freezer packs.

Again, it was a deal I couldn’t refuse. And it was such a good deal, not only did I order one for myself, I also sent one to my son and one to my daughter. Did Nueske’s lose money on me? Yup, I think they did. But now they’ve added me, my son, and my daughter to their e-mail list – three more people who are interested in the specialty products they sell. And there’s a good chance they’ll more than make up for that initial loss by making profitable back-end sales to all three of us in the future.

When you look at offers like these with your marketer’s mindset, you have an “insider’s” perspective on the tactics being used to attract you as a customer – and an inside track on being able to recognize really great bargains.

So keep reading those ETR articles. And not just because we keep urging you to get into the marketing side of whatever business you’re in (because that’s where the money is). Keep reading them because they’re turning you into a very well-informed shopper.

How Teen Video Gamers Try to Justify Their Addiction

Saturday, October 11th, 2008

“Playing video games causes teens to withdraw from their communities.” This basic assumption was the hypothesis of a recent survey of teen gamers by the Pew Internet & American Life Project. Not surprisingly, the teens who responded to the survey insisted that the opposite is true.

For one thing, these game addicts claim, rather than making them withdraw from interacting with others, many popular games, such as World of Warcraft, involve large groups of players. And, they say, although the players may not be face to face, these games do require teamwork and communication.

They also tried to make the case that gaming actually encourages them to think about deeper issues. 52 percent reported playing games that make them think about moral and ethical issues. 43 percent reported playing games where they have to help decide how a nation, community, or city should be run. And 40 percent reported playing games that teach them something about a social issue.

Well, here at ETR, we don’t buy it. Keep your kids away from video games. Far better to get them involved in activities that directly help them develop the interpersonal skills they need to succeed in life.

Obesity and the Brain: The Exercise Connection

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

For years, conventional wisdom has been that exercise helps control weight by simply burning calories. But it appears that it does much more than that.

Last year, Arthur Kramer, Ph.D., did some groundbreaking studies at the University of Illinois. His research found that merely 30 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise three to five times a week could increase the size of the brain. The mechanism? A powerful chemical called Brain Derived Neurotropic Factor (BDNF). Harvard Professor of Psychiatry John Ratey, M.D., has called this substance “Miracle-Gro for the brain.”

According to a recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine, BDNF may help regulate calorie intake. People with low levels of the chemical have a considerably greater risk of being overweight.

This new study isn’t the first time a connection between obesity and BDNF has been noted. In a 2007 study in Neuroscience, researchers removed the BDNF gene in two of the appetite-regulating areas of the brains of mice. They promptly became fat!

But genes aren’t destiny. Researchers were able to get the mice back to normal weight by restricting their food intake.

It’s always easier to eat less food if you aren’t too hungry. So why not boost levels of a natural compound – BDNF – that could help control your appetite in the first place? Especially when you can increase your BDNF levels so easily… with basic, everyday exercise.

Sweeter Than Sugar, Worse for Your Health?

Saturday, October 4th, 2008

Table sugar, honey, and high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Which sweetener is worse for your health? The Corn Refiners Association would like you to believe they’re all the same.

After a recent release by the American Medical Association stating that HFCS is “unlikely to contribute more to obesity than other caloric sweeteners,” the Corn Refiners Association launched a marketing campaign estimated to cost as much as $30 million to “set the record straight.”

So, what is the truth?

While HFCS has the same glycemic index as table sugar (85-92), numerous studies show that it behaves differently in the body – short-wiring our metabolism, encouraging fat storage, and causing lipid dysfunction.

In fact, between 1970 (when HFCS was introduced) and 2000 (when the average annual consumption of HFCS reached 73.5 pounds per person!), the prevalence of obesity more than doubled. The incidence of metabolic syndrome and Type II diabetes has also increased.

Your best bet? Choose none of the above. Steer clear of any added sugars in foods and drinks. And satisfy your sweet tooth safely with healthier options like all-natural, calorie-free stevia and erythritol.

[Ed. Note: Despite what you may hear in TV commercials, high fructose corn syrup is NOT good for you. So steer clear. For more on the foods you should be eating to be healthier and live longer, sign up for ETR's natural health e-letter. Get your free subscription here.

Save $64,000 With 3 Cardiovascular Cures That Cost Next to Nothing

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

I love to spend money. Whether it’s buying books for my child, a lift ticket for a day of snowboarding, or date night with my wife, I get great satisfaction out of spending money on products, services, and activities that I perceive as having value.

But more than spending, I enjoy investing. Wise investing allowed me to escape an arduous nine-to-five career with one of the world’s largest drug providers. And making wise investments in my health – in the foods I eat and the activities I engage in – has been one of the most important things I’ve ever done.

The fact is, your health is an investment. Possibly the best investment you will ever make. If you invest in it now, you will see big returns in the future. If you don’t, it could cost you big time down the line.

According to a recent report by CNN Money, “The retirement health tab can run between $64,000 and $122,000 for a 65-year-old man whose former employer pays his insurance premiums, and between $86,000 and $140,000 for a woman of the same age. For retirees who don’t have access to an employer-offered plan, the costs – mostly for prescription drugs – run even higher.”

In addition to exorbitant drug expenses, most adult Americans have one foot in the grave. Obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer are at an all-time high. And it’s expected to get worse. The Journal of the American Medical Association predicted that one in three born in the year 2000 will succumb to Type II diabetes, which is simply a “gateway” disease to all the pandemic killers. This rampant sickness is being met with an arsenal of cholesterol-lowering drugs, blood pressure meds, anti-depressants, and hypoglycemics. None have been proven to increase lifespan. They are toxic and ineffective, yet, they are continually pushed upon us… for one reason: financial gain.

Health doesn’t have to be so damn expensive or risky. Science proves it. Mother Nature provides three cardiovascular cures that cost next to nothing. Combined, they can help you overcome a weakening heart and even Type II diabetes.

Low-Cost Cardiovascular Cure #1: Psyllium Husk

Psyllium husk is a soluble fiber, meaning it is an indigestible, complex carbohydrate. Once consumed, it undergoes fermentation in the large intestine, yielding a broad range of heart-healthy benefits, most notably the control of appetite, blood sugar, and insulin.

A pooled analysis of 10 studies of dietary fiber intake in the U.S. and Europe found that each 10 grams/day increase in total dietary fiber was associated with a 14 percent decrease in the risk of coronary events, and a 24 percent decrease in deaths from coronary heart disease.

Psyllium husk is one of my favorite supplements because of its ability to help control blood glucose. Excess glucose in the bloodstream can become “oxidized.” This oxidation leads to a change in the molecular structure of the glucose – causing what is known as advanced glycation end products (AGE products). Like a knife carving clay, AGE products scar arterial walls. The scarring results in plaque buildup and excess blood clotting. This mechanism is why diabetics have a 4.5 times increase of suffering from heart attack and stroke relative to non-diabetics.

Go to your local health food store and purchase psyllium husk. In the bulk aisle, psyllium can be purchased for about $3 per month.

Low-Cost Cardiovascular Cure #2: B Vitamins

B vitamins are required for proper functioning of the brain, nervous system, and the formation of blood. They are also involved in the metabolism of every cell of the human body, especially for proper DNA synthesis and regulation, but also for fatty acid synthesis and energy production. Harvard researchers writing in the Journal of the American Medical Association stated that women could cut their risk of heart disease by half with daily consumption of B vitamins.

B vitamins are responsible for igniting a chemical cascade within the body known as methylation. This process rids the arteries of the damaging molecule known as homocysteine. The lower your levels of homocysteine, the less risk you have of suffering from cardiovascular disease.

Start supplementing with B vitamins today. A daily B vitamin supplement should cost no more than $10 per month.

Low-Cost Cardiovascular Cure #3: Flavonoids

Flavonoids are plant-derived pigments. More than 4,000 have been studied for their cardiovascular and anti-cancer benefits. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported a 20 percent decrease in heart disease mortality risk among those who consumed at least 7.5 mg daily.

Flavonoids preserve the cardiovascular system and heart through three major actions: improving blood flow in order to enhance oxygen and nutrient delivery throughout the 100,000 miles of adult veins, arteries and capillaries… preventing the formation of artery-scarring, oxidized LDL… and relaxing the coronary arteries to prevent high blood pressure.

Make sure your shopping cart is loaded with foods that are packed with flavonoids. The best sources of flavonoids are broccoli, hawthorn, grapeseed extract, black tea, citrus fruits, and organic dark chocolate.

Using these three cardiovascular cures rather than drugs to preserve health is a wise investment. It could potentially save you $64,000 in drug costs. What could you do with an extra $64,000 and good health? For me, it means more education for my kids, snowboarding, and date nights in exotic places around the world.

The Belly-Blasting Power of Antioxidants

Monday, September 29th, 2008

You have probably heard that obesity raises your risk for heart disease and diabetes, as well as other diseases. And recent studies have found that fat around the waist or belly is particularly harmful.

This “visceral” fat produces inflammatory compounds such as TNF-alpha and Interleukin-6 (IL-6), which can damage insulin receptors and lead to insulin resistance. And insulin resistance is at the root of most chronic diseases, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

Fortunately, there are some simple ways to get rid of that “spare tire” around your middle.

A low-carb diet high in vegetables, healthy fats, and quality proteins has been proven to decrease belly fat and the resulting inflammation. Eating this way drastically limits your intake of foods that elevate insulin (sugary foods and breads, for example).

Recent research indicates that the antioxidants in vegetables, fruits, and other foods are another important component of this diet.

University of New Mexico scientists found that two potent antioxidants – curcumin and resveratrol, respectively found in the spice turmeric  and in red wine,   - inhibited the cell compound (NF Kappa B) that promotes the production of TNF-alpha and IL-6. They concluded that curcumin and resveratrol can reduce inflammatory signaling that comes from being overweight. Additionally, these antioxidants may help repair damage to cells, keep insulin receptors working, and help you avoid insulin-resistance-induced disease.

Eating a wide variety of vegetables, fruit in moderation, and cooking with various herbs and spices as part of a low-carb diet is a sure way to enhance your health with anti-inflammatory antioxidants. Oh, and go ahead and enjoy a glass of red wine while you’re preparing that healthy dinner!

A Sprig of Protection

Monday, September 15th, 2008

Do you eat potatoes, toast, crackers, chips, cereal, or other carbohydrate-rich foods cooked at high temperatures? If so, you’re exposing yourself to acrylamide – a dangerous carcinogen that’s been linked to several types of cancer in humans.

To prevent exposure to acrylamide, your best bet is to avoid these high-glycemic, nutrient-void foods altogether. But for the occasional indulgence, there’s something you can do to protect yourself. Just add some rosemary.

Recent research published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that adding a small amount of rosemary to dough prior to baking wheat-based buns at 225 C (437 F) reduced the acrylamide content by up to 60 percent.

So if you choose to roast some redskin potatoes or make whole-grain bread from scratch – add a bit of rosemary to boost flavor and help protect yourself from this harmful carcinogen.

Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

How much is your health worth to you? For most people, the answer is quite simple: Everything.

But in this age of “pill and procedure” medicine, many wait until it’s too late to make an investment in their health. And with the rising cost of food, it’s tempting to scrimp and save wherever you can.

I have two important messages for you: (1) The time to invest in your health is now! Not when your quality of life has become compromised. And (2) the good news is that eating high-quality food – the finest Mother Nature has to offer – doesn’t have to break the bank.

Food, like anything, tends to be less costly when it is mass produced. Producing it the right way – with care and attention to the environment – often costs more. Still, there are many conventional foods that give you the same nutritional bang for the buck as organics. At the same time, there are some “superfoods” you should be eating – and willing to pay a little more for.

Here’s the scoop on five of them…

#1: Wild Salmon

Salmon has been heralded for its many health benefits (and deservedly so). The popularity of this fish has created wide demand. And to satiate consumers’ appetites, thousands of fish farms have arisen on the world’s coasts. Unfortunately, in this case, Mother Nature has not been successfully mimicked.

What was once touted as a health food for its robust levels of essential omega-3s has become a fishy substitute at best. At worst, farmed salmon will do you more harm than good. And that’s why I urge you to buy only wild salmon.

How does this superfood turn from friend to foe? Here are the facts:

• Farmed salmon contains endocrine-disrupting PCBs. Farmed salmon are fed fishmeal pellets that concentrate known cancer-causing pollutants called PCBs. While all salmon have some level of PCBs, farmed salmon have seven times higher levels than wild salmon.

• Farmed salmon are lower in powerful antioxidants. Wild salmon dine on krill, which contain a carotenoid called astaxanthin (pronounced: asta-ZAN-thin) – one of the most powerful antioxidants ever discovered. Astaxanthin is also the nutrient responsible for wild salmon’s beautiful red-orange color.

• Farmed salmon are treated with artificial coloring. Because farmed salmon are fed cornmeal, soy, and canola oil – not their natural diet of krill – they are gray in color. They turn pink only when given chemically synthesized astaxanthin or treated with artificial coloring agents.

• Farmed salmon promote inflammation. As a result of their diet, the flesh of farmed salmon contains up to four times the amount of inflammatory omega-6s than the flesh of wild salmon… and far less essential omega-3s.

• Farmed salmon are loaded with antibiotics. Due to the cramped quarters in fish farms, lice and disease spread rapidly. And, in fact, farmed salmon are administered more antibiotics by weight than any other form of livestock.

You can’t afford not to eat wild salmon. It is one of the few fish that is still remarkably unpolluted, it is sustainably harvested, and it’s one of the healthiest proteins you can put on your plate.

The additional cost per serving of wild salmon ranges between $0.50 (Target, Archer Farms brand) to approximately $2.00 (Vital Choice)… a very small price to pay for a huge improvement in quality.

#2: Coffee

If you love coffee, you’ll be glad to know that you can indulge yourself and promote your health too. Coffee is a rich source of age-defying antioxidants, and recent research even suggests it helps prevent Parkinson’s and fight diabetes.

But I have some jolting news. If the coffee you drink is not organic, you’re exposing yourself to cup after cup of high levels of pesticides. Some of the many chemicals commonly used against the “coffee borer” include highly toxic endosulfan, dursban, basudin, and disulfoton.

Get the most out of your morning java by choosing organic, shade-grown coffee. You can find it in most food stores, or buy in bulk online from a company like Cafe Altura. Expect to pay about $11 per pound for organic whole beans versus $7 for conventional whole beans.

#3: Grass-Fed Beef

Beef was once believed to be harmful due to its saturated-fat content. However, research now shows that the real culprit is the extremely high level of inflammatory omega-6 fats that are created when cattle are fed a steady diet of corn. Not to mention the hormones used to hasten the trip of mass-produced beef to the butcher.

Way back when, cattle ate grass. Not corn. And they weren’t pumped full of growth hormones (rBGH) and antibiotics and packed into pens. These few changes have turned a healthful food into one of your body’s worst enemies.

But there is a way to have your beef and stay well too. Choose grass-fed! When cattle graze on their natural diet of grass, they have a healthier lipid profile – with much higher levels of healthy omega-3s and very low levels of inflammation-causing omega-6s. These animals are also naturally healthier, which means they are given antibiotics sparingly and only when necessary.

You can expect to pay about 50 percent to 100 percent more per pound for grass-fed beef, but the higher quality of the meat and many health benefits are worth it. For amazingly sumptuous cuts of the finest naturally raised beef, go straight to the appropriately named source – U.S. Wellness Meats. The company is managed with the same dignity and honesty as the folks who did it “way back when.”

Looking for a bargain? Try buffalo! These animals aren’t kept in pens (Would you want to try to put a buffalo in a pen?) and it’s illegal to give them hormones. That makes buffalo a natural alternative to grass-fed beef that is relatively inexpensive (about $7 per pound) and available in stores nationwide through Maverick Ranch.

#4: Berries

It’s hard to believe that sweet and juicy berries are so chockfull of age-defying, disease-fighting substances. And despite their taste, they are very low in sugar and score low on the glycemic index.

But I do have some bad news to share. Berries are one of the crops most highly contaminated with pesticides. In fact, cherries, strawberries, and raspberries are on the top-12 list of contaminated crops (a.k.a. The Dirty Dozen) that you should always buy organic.

Escaping harmful pesticides isn’t the only reason to choose organic berries. Research shows that organic strawberries, for example, boast 25 percent more antioxidants and more cancer-fighting power than their conventional counterparts.

Expect to pay about $1 to $2 more per pound for frozen organic berries.

#5: Cocoa

The news that cocoa is good for you has folks gobbling it up… like candy. And as long as the cocoa products they choose aren’t packed with sugar or artificial ingredients, they’re probably doing their bodies a big favor.

In addition to its many mood-boosting and heart-healthy compounds, organic, natural cocoa has an antioxidant score higher than that of almost any other food. Measured in ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) units, cocoa’s is around 80,000. Compare that to “antioxidant-rich” blueberries, which have an ORAC of around 6,500.

But before you grab the first box of cocoa you see on the shelf, here’s something you need to know. Most cocoa is “alkalized” – treated with alkali, a harsh chemical base that cuts its considerable antioxidant capacity in half. The solution: Choose organic, non-alkalized cocoa.

NOW Foods makes a delicious organic, non-alkalized cocoa that’s easy on the wallet. At only $5.50 for 12 ounces (versus $3.15 for 8 ounces of Hershey’s), you’ll enjoy higher quality and a more valuable product for less than a dime more per ounce. Mix it into your coffee, whirl it in a smoothie, or add it to low-glycemic dessert recipes.

The Bottom Line

When you invest in your health by spending a little extra on the above superfoods, you’ll get many of the rewards – like more energy, a better mood, glowing skin, and a youthful vibrancy – almost immediately. Later, this investment will pay off by not only increasing your lifespan but your health span too.

Well worth the money, don’t you think?

The Diet Secret You Probably Aren’t Using

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

The worst thing you can do when trying to lose weight is “go it alone.” Support from your friends and family can help you eat better and exercise more.

Scientists at the University of Michigan studied 228 women in order to determine the connection between social support and the women’s ability to eat well and exercise consistently. And though most of the subjects reported low to moderate social support, the more social support they received, the more physical activity they did and the better their nutrition was.

As a result of their lack of social support, most of the women didn’t make improvements in their body composition during the study. But as my personal research shows, the more a person’s friends and family support their efforts to lose fat through exercise and diet, the better their chances of success.

So grab a nutrition buddy at work, a workout partner at the gym or at home, and some online support at your favorite fitness website. These three valuable sources will help you lose inches and burn belly fat consistently.

[Ed. Note: It's true. Online support can be very helpful when it comes to reaching your fitness goals. Share your weight-loss struggles, diet and exercise techniques, and encouragement for free right here.]

Dear ETR: “Where do I find organic wine?”

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

“Kelley Herring had an insightful article in ETR about pesticides in wine.

“My question is: Where do I find organic wine? My health food store doesn’t have it. And I don’t remember seeing it in any grocery or ‘drug’ stores. Is there a company we could order it from?

“By the way, I live in Bryan/College Station, Texas. It’s not exactly a metropolis.

“Thank you for any help you may send my way.”

Sally M.

Dear Sally,

While organic wines can be found at most larger health-oriented markets, like Whole Foods and Trader Joes, I’ve found an even better option: The Organic Wine Company. Not only are their wines organic, they also offer sulfite-free and biodynamic wines.

Owned and operated by the Raskin family (which includes several forward-thinking doctors, might I add), The Organic Wine Company has been in business for 200 years. They work with small vineyards that take great pride in creating handcrafted wines that are eco-friendly too.

My favorites include Chateau Veronique – aptly named for the company’s spirited co-owner – with a jammy fruit character of cherry, plum, and blackberry, and Crozes Hermitage – a strong, aromatic Syrah with smokey, black fruit flavors.

Check out their extensive (and reasonably priced) selection at theorganicwinecompany.com. They even offer a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee.

- Kelley Herring

[Ed. Note: Organic red wine is not the only “forbidden” luxury that you can enjoy without feeling guilty. Now you can eat delicious chocolate cake, too, and not worry about it. How to (Finally!) Get That 6-Pack

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

You’ve been working on those 6-pack abs for as long as you can remember… and nothing seems to help. Perhaps the solution lies in the results of a new study published in The Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research. The study showed that doing ab exercises “explosively” (i.e., faster) makes your abdominal muscles work harder.

But this information isn’t all good. Before you start doing lightning-speed crunches, here’s what you need to know…

Explosive movements increase the amount of muscle used, but they also cause more muscle damage… which means more muscle soreness. Plus, you can’t talk about the abs without talking about the lower back and spine. Your lower back and abs need endurance exercises for health and safety, but for 6-pack abs you want maximum abdominal recruitment.

So here’s the best way to get both: Do only one explosive ab movement per workout. Then do at least one ab endurance exercise.

Explosive ab movements include medicine ball slams, sledgehammer swings, kettlebell swings, sandbag swings, and band pulldowns.

Here’s how to do the medicine ball slam: Hold a medicine ball at waist height. Step forward with one leg while raising the ball overhead (stretching your abs). As you plant your foot, reverse your arm direction and contract your abs, driving the medicine ball into the ground. Pick up the ball and repeat 6 times.

After you’ve done your explosive ab exercise, you can do something like a plank, side plank, or plank with your arms on the ball for your abdominal endurance exercise. That will help you work more of your abs while supporting your “core” muscles.

[Ed. Note: Building strong abs is a good way to burn fat. For more simple exercises that can help you lose weight and build muscle, check out fitness expert Craig Ballantyne's Turbulence Training program.

2 Supplements for Mature Men

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Strength and muscle mass are two of the most important components for healthy living in older folks. If you don’t have strength, every activity is going to be harder than it should be. So you’ll be happy to know that there are two nutritional supplements that can help you build strength, no matter how old you are.

Canadian researchers divided their study participants – all of them older men – into three groups. One group received a placebo, another group received creatine (a supplement marketed as a muscle-builder), and the third group received creatine and protein. All of the men completed a 10-week strength-training program.

At the end of the study, both groups receiving the creatine increased body mass and muscle thickness. But the creatine-protein group had the greatest increase in lean tissue mass (5.6 percent) and the greatest increase in bench-press strength (25 percent).

So if you are looking to maximize your muscle gains – at any age – consider adding a protein-creatine supplement to your nutrition program.

You won’t be surprised to learn that listening to your iPod at a high volume for long periods of time – via headphones – can cause hearing loss. The cells destroyed by constant, loud music are irreplaceable. But some headphones – those that block out background noise – can help keep your hearing safe. With these headphones, since the music is no longer competing with other sounds, you can listen to it at lower levels.

Issue#2438 – It’s Good to Know: Flying Without ID

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

You get to the airport for your 7:20 a.m. flight to Denver and realize you forgot your driver’s license. Don’t fret. You can fly within the United States without identification… but you will be subjected to intense scrutiny by the Transportation Security Administration.

There will be a bag search and a thorough once-over by the metal-detecting “wand.” And, thanks to a rule that went into effect June 21, agents will also quiz you about personal details that appear in public records, such as your old addresses, when you were married, or your license plate number.

Getting Past the Fat-Loss “Dip”

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

I’ve been reading a little book called The Dip by Seth Godin. It’s all about how the biggest marketing results are often achieved after a struggle. Unfortunately, many people quit during the struggle and never achieve success.

This is very true not only of marketing but of fat loss, working out, and eating right. (You might be able to relate.)

After all, it’s not too hard to get through the morning or even the early part of the afternoon without “cheating” on your diet. But late in the afternoon, sticking to your healthy eating plan becomes an effort. And while sitting around after dinner, it’s practically impossible to resist the siren call of cookies or chips. But those who make it through WIN. They end up eating fewer calories and losing fat for the day.

Same with workouts. The warm-up is fine, and the first few sets are tough but manageable. But further into the workout, some folks want to quit… even though it is often the last set, the last rep, that gives the most results. If we didn’t experience discomfort and fatigue while exercising, we wouldn’t change our bodies.

As Godin says, “It is human nature to quit when it hurts.” And human nature is why you see more lard bodies than hard bodies.

We have to get through what he calls “the dip.” And the two worst things you can do when you are in “the dip” are to…

(a) Quit. (That’s obvious.)

(b) Jump to another program. Every time you jump, you are starting over again. Always give a program a full four-week trial period to see if it really works for you.

How do you beat the dip when the struggle is so hard? By reminding yourself of how good life will be on the other side of the dip – how good things will be once you make it through the struggle.

You can get to a point where you’ll prefer whole, natural foods over junk food. You can get to a point where you’ll look forward to your workouts, rather than finding excuses to blow them off.

But you must have the right mindset. You must stay strong. And the best way to do both is to get help from your social support network. Surrounding yourself with positive social support is the most important thing you can do in your weight-loss program.

[Ed. Note: Social support can help you stick with your diet and exercise program until you have the body you've always wanted. Meet up with other health-minded people at ETR's SpeakOut Forum right here.

A Surprise Danger to Your Knees and Back

Saturday, August 2nd, 2008

Last spring, I made the mistake of wearing flip-flops on a couple of long walks with my dog. “What does it matter?” I thought. “It’s just an hour walk.” But after doing this a couple of times, I noticed that my knees were sore and my ankles were stiff.

Fortunately, I was bright enough to make the connection between the flip-flops and my discomfort, so I tossed the flip-flops. After switching to a good pair of walking shoes, my joints were no longer sore.

Every summer, thousands of folks slip out of their regular walking shoes and start piling on the miles in flip-flops. As a result, many end up having to visit a doctor.

I asked Dr. Michael Sommers, a chiropractor in Roncasvilles, Toronto, to explain why this innocent-looking footwear can lead to such a dramatic onset of pain.

According to Dr. Sommers, “There is nothing remotely healthy about wearing flip-flops, especially during long walks. They provide little or no support to the ankle and only minimal shock absorption during weight-bearing activity – leading to wear and tear in the joint surfaces of the ankle, knee, and spine. Flip-flops were designed for the beach. That’s really only where they should be worn.”

A study presented at the American College of Sports Medicine found: “When people walk in flip-flops, they alter their gait, which can result in problems and pain from the foot up into the hips and lower back. When subjects wore flip-flops, they took shorter steps and their heels hit the ground with less vertical force than when they wore athletic shoes.”

The researchers concluded that you should wear flip-flops only for a short period of time. So chuck your thong sandals and replace them with walking shoes. Your feet will thank you.

Danger in a Bottle

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

You may think you’re doing yourself a favor by drinking spring water. But new research shows there could be danger lurking in the bottle.

A recent study published in Toxicology Letters found that polycarbonate water bottles, exposed to regular conditions, contain harmful levels of bisphenol A (BPA). BPA is an endocrine disruptor that acts like estrogen in the body, triggering hormonal changes and encouraging the growth of breast and prostate cancers.

Dr. James LaValle has recommended, in ETR, that you avoid drinking or eating from heated plastic. And that’s one step you can take to protect yourself against BPA. However, while you can keep your water bottles cool after you’ve purchased them, there’s no knowing their past history of heat exposure or storage time – which also affects the amount of BPA that leaches into the water.

To limit your exposure, avoid bottles with the recycling number 7, as most contain BPA. Instead, opt for recycling numbers 2 and 4 or cloudy-colored plastics, which are usually free of BPA. You can also use a high quality reverse-osmosis purification system (which removes other harmful things, too), and store your water in glass bottles in the refrigerator.

The 2 Things Killing Your Weight Loss

Monday, July 21st, 2008

Monday to Friday, you are a fat-burning robot. You work out first thing in the morning, eat breakfast, have a high-protein salad for lunch, a healthy afternoon snack, and then a sensible dinner. It all adds up to a pound of fat loss per week.

Or so it should, if it were not for the two fat-loss killers, Saturday and Sunday.

Researchers from the Washington University School of Medicine recruited 48 men and women who were losing weight during the week but gaining on weekends. The subjects – who reported eating more and/or exercising less on Saturdays and Sundays – were put on a yearlong weight-loss program. Half were put on a calorie-restricted diet, while the other half were put on an exercise program.

Both groups lost weight during the week, but stopped losing on weekends. The researchers say it’s because both groups ended up eating more calories on the weekend.

Here’s what you need to do to prevent weekend weight gain from catching up with you.

First, identify all the problems that come up on weekends that cause you to eat more or exercise less.

Second, brainstorm two solutions for each one of those problems.

If you plan and prepare for your weekends just as hard as you do for your weekdays, you’ll continue to lose fat week in and week out.

The Green Tea Scam

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Green tea is a healthy drink. It’s been shown to boost brain health, protect against Parkinson’s, increase metabolism, protect the prostate, and reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease. But, contrary to claims made in many ads making the rounds these days, it does NOT cause weight loss.

  • Researchers from Taiwan randomized 78 overweight women into two groups for a 12-week study. One group took green tea extract (491 mg catechins containing 302 mg of the powerful antioxidant EGCG), and the control group took a placebo.

The average reduction in weight in the green tea group was insignificant – only 0.3 percent (0.15 kg). About the same as it was in the placebo group. However, the green tea extract did improve the subjects’ health by reducing their LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, while increasing HDL ("good cholesterol"). The placebo group saw a reduction only in triglycerides.

So the bottom line is this. Green tea is healthy, but it doesn’t cause fat loss.

There’s no such thing as a magic pill for weight loss. So forget about trying to find an easy way out. Burning fat takes work. It requires planning. It requires following a proven, structured workout program. But if you put those structures in place, you will see results.

Qi Gong for Stress Reduction and More

Monday, July 7th, 2008

You may have never bothered to wonder why a cat grooms itself all day. But you should. The answer could impact your health.

Princeton researchers inserted electrodes into the brainstems of cats, and then recorded what was happening over the course of the cats’ day. Not much. Until they started grooming themselves. Then their levels of serotonin – a feel-good neurotransmitter involved with stress-reduction and overall well-being – went through the roof. It actually increased 40-fold! How’s that for a stress reliever?

There’s a lesson here. Concentrated, repetitive motion raises serotonin activity. Which brings us to one of the best stress reducers in the world: qi gong.

Three decades ago, Herbert Benson, MD, the pioneering doctor who helped introduce the concept of mind-body medicine to the U.S., studied qi gong while he was researching what he termed “the relaxation response.” He concluded that to reach a state of deep relaxation, all you have to do is control your body, your breathing, and your mind.

Qi gong is a family of mind-body exercises that share all of those elements: regulation of the body, regulation of breathing, and regulation of the mind. In qi gong, as in many meditative practices, you control your mind by concentrating on a single thought. It can be a word, a mantra, a sound, a letter. You regulate your breathing in some controlled way (such as breathing in on a slow count of 4 and breathing out on a slow count of 4), and you add some regular, specific movement to handle the body part of it. Those three components are the trifecta of increased serotonin activity – and with it, greater energy and well-being.

At the University of Southern California, Irvine, Dr. Shin Lin (a visiting professor from Shanghai University) has found significant, measurable beneficial effects on the nervous system from doing qi gong. Other researchers have demonstrated that when you practice certain movements – such as those in qi gong – you get enhanced blood flow. Couple that with an increase in serotonin levels, and you’ve got a great prescription for lowering stress while increasing your overall energy.

Toxic Burden

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

I’ve been talking for years about the effect of various environmental toxins on our metabolism. And now, almost every day, we read news headlines that validate what I’ve been saying about the importance of reducing our exposure to toxic chemicals.

Today, let’s focus on a biggie – perfluorooctanoic acid, or PFOA. This chemical is used in the manufacture of non-stick pan coatings, food wrappers, personal care products, and stain-resistant coatings on carpets and other materials. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has become concerned about PFOA because it has been found in the blood of 90 percent of Americans, as well as throughout the environment.

PFOA is persistent in the environment, meaning it doesn’t break down with water or biodegrade in other ways, and it may not be eliminated well from the body. The health problems from PFOA include diminished thyroid function, decreased immune function, liver toxicity, and higher cholesterol levels (leading to potential weight problems and heart disease).

In cooperation with an initiative by the EPA to phase out PFOA emissions by 2015, most companies that use PFOA in their products are looking for alternatives. Just how much exposure you get directly from water and oil-repelling products is not known. In the meantime, boycotting products manufactured with PFOA may help stop environmental contamination sooner. So, here’s what you can do:

  • Avoid using Teflon and other non-stick coated pans, especially over high heat and/or if the coating is chipped or flaking.
  • Avoid food in packages with slippery surfaces, including fast-food wrappers, microwave popcorn bags, and bakery and candy support liners.
  • Choose solid-surface materials for flooring instead of carpets treated with stain-resistant coatings.
  • And when choosing personal care products (such as lotions, nail polish, makeup, and shaving cream), avoid those with ingredients that have "-fluoro" or "-perfluoro" in their names.

Take Advantage of the World Traveler’s Secret to Staying Younger Longer

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

If you do a lot of traveling for business, you’ve probably already discovered melatonin. It eases jet lag and lets you get some precious sleep in those cramped airplane seats. But nature’s sleep regulator holds another little-known secret: It can reverse the effects of aging.

Melatonin holds not one but nearly half a dozen age-fighters. They can help you look and feel younger longer. And this hormone can protect your cells against deadly diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s.

Today, I’m going to tell you how you can add melatonin safely and easily to your anti-aging program, and why you should.

Boost Your Physique, Energy, and Sexual Performance With This Anti-Aging Supplement

Your body produces melatonin naturally. It’s the main hormone made by your pineal gland. This is a tiny, pea-sized gland at the base of your brain. One of the most important jobs this gland has is regulating your sleep cycle. It works like this: The pineal gland monitors changing light levels throughout the day, and when darkness falls it excretes melatonin to bring on sleep.

For decades, travelers have used melatonin to ease the transition between time zones with great success. But melatonin has other, more important, health-enhancing secrets.

Melatonin is one of the best-studied and most effective anti-aging nutrients available today. Surprised? Don’t be. For one thing, it is one of the only oral supplements that stimulates your body’s release of human growth hormone (HGH). This is the hormone that keeps you young.

In your youth, your body produces lots of HGH. But production slows down as you age. When you reverse this decline, you reverse aging. In fact, studies reported in Grow Young with HGH show that improving HGH levels heightens energy, sexual performance, muscle gain, fat loss, and skin appearance.

And melatonin works well to increase HGH levels even at small oral doses. What’s more, when you double the dose, HGH levels double. No wonder melatonin increases lifespan in study after study.

Bring Your Dying Cells Back to Life

Melatonin is also one of the most potent antioxidants ever discovered. It destroys disease-causing molecules called free radicals at an incredible pace. And it does something most other antioxidants can’t: It stimulates extra antioxidant enzymes that can protect against everything from wrinkles to illness.

One thing that causes aging and the diseases of aging is the death of cells. Your cells depend on their energy powerhouses called mitochondria. If the mitochondria are damaged, you fall victim to conditions like Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, even cancer. Protect the mitochondria from damage and you keep millions more cells alive. That means you’ll stay healthy and more youthful.

Melatonin is also quickly gaining a reputation as a cancer killer. In fact, it works so well at blocking tumors that doctors are already using it to treat cancer. And the results are promising. Melatonin enhances the effectiveness of other cancer treatments, reduces side effects of those treatments, and increases survival rates.

Melatonin may do more than just protect your body from aging. Studies show it may actually reverse aging where it matters most: your brain. (After all, what good is a younger looking body if you’re not "all there" to enjoy it?) Studies reported in the journal Neurobiology of Aging have shown that melatonin can reverse aging in the brain tissues of mice. Obviously, that’s not the same thing as reversing brain aging in people. But with all its other benefits, there’s no reason not to try melatonin. And if it helps keep your brain young in the process, so much the better.

Melatonin Helps Stop the Midnight Urge to "Get Up and Go"

Like human growth hormone, natural melatonin levels fall sharply as you age. To give you an idea of how low they get, take a look at this chart:

meltanonin graph

It’s a drop you can feel. For example, one of the most common complaints I hear from my older patients is that they’re not sleeping as well as they used to. This is often caused by a deficiency of melatonin.

And, as a side benefit, just a couple of milligrams will work wonders for men suffering from prostate trouble. Benign prostatic hyperplasia sufferers find they don’t have to get up and go as often at night when they’re taking melatonin.

Putting Melatonin to Work for You

If you’re over 50, you should think about supplementing with melatonin. There has been no evidence to tarnish its perfect safety record.

I recommend a small anti-aging dose of 0.5 mg at night. For jet lag, take 1 mg for every time zone crossed.

If you have cancer, I recommend a much higher "antioxidant dose" of 20 to 40 mg every night before bed. Of course, be sure to discuss this with your doctor first.

You can find melatonin in most health food stores and vitamin shops. It comes in tablet, liquid, and spray form.
[Ed. Note: It is entirely possible to get a full, restful night's sleep without worrying about scary side effects from sleep aids. Dr. Al Sears - who has been working with sleep disorders for years - has come up with a quick, easy, and natural way for you sleep soundly each night. Sleep better than you have in years.

Sleeping well is one key to staying healthy. In fact, you can improve your health just by making a few simple changes to your diet and lifestyle. Learn how to feel better and live longer right here.]

This Thing’ll Kill Ya

Friday, June 20th, 2008

It should come as no surprise that ETR, a newsletter on how to get "healthy, wealthy, and wise," doesn’t recommend watching TV. We all know that TV is detrimental to productivity. Even worse, it sets us up to eat junk food and increase our waistlines.

According to a study done by Australian researchers, the more TV people watched, the worse off they were for such health parameters as waist circumference, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels. The negative effects were even more pronounced in women, who also had higher triglycerides if they watched a lot of TV.

In fact, watching TV can even wipe out the health benefits of 2.5 hours of moderate exercise per week. So even if you exercise, you are not immune to the powerful, negative effects of TV on your health.

Instead, find a hobby that keeps you active. I have a chocolate Lab who fills my free time. You might take up dancing or a sport that you stopped playing years ago. Even use your reclaimed TV-watching time to re-connect with old friends and old activities. Pretty much anything is better than sitting on the couch and staring at the TV screen.

An Important Health Habit for the Entire Family

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

Though my wife and I have very different parenting styles, one of the things we agree on is this: Give the kids lots of sun exposure and never slather chemical sunscreen on them. Here are three reasons why:

  • Sunscreen blocks the production of melanin (the pigment causing a protective tan to form), resulting in a higher risk of skin cancer.
  • Sunscreen blocks the production of vitamin D. A deficiency of vitamin D weakens the immune system and increases the risk of heart disease and cancer. In children especially, vitamin D deficiency is also correlated with tooth decay and crooked teeth.
  • Many of the chemicals found in sunscreens are actually carcinogenic (cancer causing) and estrogenic. If you see any of the following ingredients, steer clear: benzophenones (dixoybenzone, oxybenzone), PABA and PABA esters (ethyl dihydroxy propyl PAB, glyceryl PABA, p-aminobenzoic acid, padimate-O or octyl dimethyl PABA), cinnamates (cinoxate, ethylhexyl p-methoxycinnamate, octocrylene, octyl methoxycinnamate), salicylates (ethylhexyl salicylate, homosalate, octyl salicylate), Digalloyl trioleate, Menthyl anthranilate, and Avobenzone.

Contrary to what sunscreen manufacturers wish you to believe, sunshine is not a death ray. It is a healing ray. Here are four main benefits of sun exposure:

1. It boosts neuropeptides that elevate mood and regulate appetite.

2. It reduces the risk of the deadly skin cancer melanoma and 16 other types of cancer.

3. It reduces the risk of osteoporosis and increases bone density as a result of enhanced "mineralization."

4. It increases sex drive. Not that I want my kids’ libido to be rockin’, but this is good info for the dad who needs to get his bedroom energy back.

Note that I am not suggesting that you or your kids should ever get sunburned. You can definitely get too much of a good thing. Cover up with clothing to block the sun and go indoors if your skin is getting pink. There are also several natural sunscreens on the market. The best one I have found is a brand called UV Naturals, which is made with green tea extract, bees wax, vitamin E, and grape seed oil. Not only does it protect your skin from excess sun exposure, it also helps your skin look and feel younger. I tested it on my kids recently in Florida. Worked perfectly.

The Truth About Fat Loss

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

Last November, I traveled to Mesa, AZ to hear Bill Phillips speak at a seminar. Phillips is the creator of the Body for Life Transformation Challenge. But at the end of the conference, it wasn’t Phillips’ words that I remembered. Nor was it Richard Branson’s, who spoke to us via satellite. Instead, a man named Dave Kekich caught my attention.

Mr. Kekich has written something called "The Kekich Credos" – 100 success secrets that I’ve been reviewing and then figuring out how to relate them to my clients’ fat-loss goals.

For example, here’s Kekich Credo #4: "Real regrets only come from not doing your best. All else is out of your control. You’re measured by results only. Trade excuses and ‘trying’ for results, and expect half-hearted results from half-hearted efforts. Do more than is expected of you. Life’s easy when you live it the hard way… and hard if you try to live it the easy way."

Here are my thoughts on how to apply this success secret to a fat-loss program:

  • Who are the ones berating themselves every Monday for not exercising or eating properly over the weekend? The people who did not do their best to exercise and eat right on Saturday and Sunday.
  • Most people fail to control themselves. They trade minutes of pleasure (i.e., fast food) for days, weeks, months, and years of regret.
  • Focus on quality workouts, not quantity. Focus on planning ahead to overcome obstacles, rather than trying to "out-cardio" a bad diet.
  • Always hit a personal best in each workout. This guarantees progress in both fat-burning and muscle-building.
  • Fat loss is easy once you understand how hard it is… and it’s hard if you think it is easy.

To make fat loss easy, you must:

1. Plan and prepare your meals in advance.

2. Follow a professionally designed, structured workout routine that is more intense than anything you’d put together for yourself.

3. Get social support from others who have gone through the same trials and tribulations that you face.

Do those three things… and you will succeed.

Why TV Makes Us Fat

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

One of my best clients grew up watching a lot of TV. In fact, he feels that he was practically raised by Cliff Huxtable (of the Cosby Show) and Meredith Baxter-Birney (from Family Ties). That’s how much TV he watched.

He finished college and started a real job. But he still rounded out his day with a nightly television marathon. So we shouldn’t be surprised that he "beefed up" to over 200 pounds. (He’s 5′10".) Especially when we look at the results of a recent Australian study.

The researchers examined the connections between watching TV, eating, and exercising in young adults (aged 26-36). They found that the young woman who watched more than three hours per day of TV had a higher prevalence of severe abdominal obesity when compared to the women who watched less than one hour of TV. For the men, only moderate abdominal obesity was associated with watching more than three hours of TV per day. Not severe – but still worse than the men who watched less than an hour per day.

The researchers also found that taking into account the daily physical activity levels of these men and women did not entirely explain the differences. What seemed to be more relevant was that the men and women who watched more TV also tended to consume more food and drinks.

Once my client eliminated sodas and foods from a bag or a box, he immediately started to lose weight. And fast. Plus, by adding three short strength-training and interval-training workouts per week, he got down well below his college weight, and is now as fit as he was more than 10 years ago.

The message for you? The same things we’ve been saying in ETR for years. Shut off the TV. Dump the soda. Eat fresh veggies and grass-fed meats instead of carbs. And get moving.

Take Your Water Bottle With You When You Leave Your Car

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

You know that water bottle you carry with you everywhere? Or the bottles you use to feed your baby? If they’re plastic, they could be making you or your baby very sick. Fortunately, there’s one easy step you can take to protect yourself and your loved ones from the "toxic" effects of plastic.

The bottles you use may contain bisphenol A (BPA), an "endocrine disrupter" used to add strength to clear plastics. BPA can mimic, mask, or interfere with the effects of the body’s natural hormones. It’s been linked to prostate and breast cancer, and to neurological disorders in children.

The growing body of evidence was sufficient for the U.S. government to issue a warning: "the possibility that bisphenol A may alter human development cannot be dismissed." The Canadian government went further, listing BPA as a toxic substance, and banning the use of polycarbonate baby bottles. Children are exceptionally vulnerable to BPA because they are still growing and developing, but adults are also at risk.

But there’s one simple thing you can do right now to safeguard your family’s health. Researchers at the University of Cincinnati found high temperatures from exposure to boiling water produced a 40-fold increase in the rate of BPA release, regardless of the bottle’s age.

So don’t heat that plastic. Microwave your beverages and food in glass or ceramic dishes. Never heat plastic baby bottles, and wash your plastic containers by hand to avoid the high temperatures in your dishwasher.

And take that water bottle with you when you leave your car in the hot sun.

[Learning why your drinking water may not be safe is just one of the health warnings that is ignored by mainstream media.  When you subscribe to Dr. James LaValle’s The Healing Prescription, you’ll get the straight facts about the food you eat, the medications you take, and most importantly, how to take control of your health – information your doctor may not even know! Toxic Cosmetics!

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

Would you knowingly go out and buy mercury or lead and put it on your skin? No. You are certainly smarter than that. But the important word here is " knowingly" – because, believe it or not, there are still cosmetics and skin care products out there in the marketplace that are made with toxic ingredients. Fortunately, one website is pointing out the offenders so you can keep yourself safe.

A recent report published by the Environmental Working Group, a non-profit research organization in Washington, DC, identifies these products on their sister website, SafeCosmetics.org. (Who knew that some companies put mercury in their mascara?)

Lack of Sleep Leads to Weight Gain

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

I wish it were simpler, but a lot of things can cause you to gain fat. It’s not always just a lack of exercise and an overabundance of food. So if you are eating right and exercising, but still having a hard time burning off excess inches, maybe you should take a look at your sleeping patterns.

In a study of 30 Greek women, researchers found that those who slept less had more body fat. In fact, for every one-hour decrease in the number of hours they slept, the women saw an increase of almost three percent more body fat.

The researchers were unable to associate a lack of sleep with an increase in caloric intake, so the reason for their results remains a mystery.

But… if you aren’t getting seven or eight hours of sleep each night, this could be the missing link in your fat-loss program. Try going to bed 30 minutes earlier for the next week, and then go to bed even 30 minutes earlier for another week. See if that helps you lose more fat.

Are Your Bad Habits Causing Cancer?

Monday, August 20th, 2007

Are your lifestyle habits killing you? Or are they ensuring that you "live young"?

Have you ever noticed that obesity, heart disease, and cancer seem to afflict several people in the same family? Genetics are usually blamed. However, poor health passed down through generations is the result of lifestyle habits. Those who share similar habits also share the same health – bad or good. And those who make the same lifestyle changes experience equivalent changes in health – regardless of genetics.

To make a health transformation, you must capitalize on healthy habits. Two dangerous habits that are infecting Americans are habitual sugar consumption and a continual lack of moderate sunshine. Combined, these habits create an environment within your body that’s conducive to cancer growth. By minimizing sugar and exposing your body to direct sunlight for at least 20 minutes daily, you help prevent this pandemic killer from decreasing the time you can spend enjoying life.
