I’d have to say that knack for business was born into my bones. Seems like I was always hustling - lemonade stand…wash your car…make an extra nickel here and an extra dime there…

So you see, even at the innocent age of twelve I had that certain something going that makes us want to be entrepreneurs. I knew there had to be a way to do it faster and easier, and better, and more productive! And pull in more money!

But it would take a few years for that spirit to really blossom.

My first ‘real job’ was working in the sub, sub basement (that’s right, 3 floors below the street!) in a bank in Minneapolis. I worked in the bank forms shipping department next to the money counting room.

But at my first job review I was shocked to learn that my pay was decreased - and I was still expected to ‘give my utmost’ to the bank.

‘Man,’ I thought, ‘This job really sucks.’

It was my first taste of the world of employment. And frankly, whenever I’ve been an employee, my experience has been about the same.

It didn’t take me long to figure out that I could do better on my own. My Scout O’ Rama ticket adventure had shown me that I had a knack for business. That, plus my desire to work for myself, was worth more than the so-called ’security’ of a bank job.

So I became a sort of ‘pilgrim entrepreneur’ - looking for personal and financial freedom. 

The ‘Pilgrim Entrepreneur’ 

And along the way I lived in dozens of places - from the most backwater trailer parks, to dirty and mean big city streets, to very posh neighborhoods.

I moved around more than Johnny Appleseed.

It was 1988 when I first passed through Owls Head Maine. I went there to take the hand of my wife (actually, we eloped - but her parents say they love me anyway).

Now, Maine was the most breathtaking place I had ever seen in my life. I told my wife that someday we might return if I could start a business and support our family there. But I told her I didn’t want to open a retail store, or become a pottery maker, painter or a lobsterman.

And in ‘88 I wasn’t ready to move there yet. I was still on my pilgrimage.

You see, my wandering wasn’t just geographical. Over the course of 20 years, in all those different places, I worked at dozens of jobs. Until I got sick and tired of being jerked around by slumlords, fat cats and bosses.

Then I started creating my own businesses. Shoot, even if I was going to be poor, at least I could have my dignity.

But I wasn’t poor. Granted, not every one of my ventures was profitable. But most of them were. 

I’ve Started More Businesses Than Carter Has Little Liver Pills… 

Over the years I had dozens of successful ventures, including:

• Selling fresh crabmeat to five-star chefs

• A specialty window washing service
