Apogee
Archives: Word to the Wise
“Apogee” (AP-uh-jee) – from the Greek for “away from the earth” – is the point in the orbit of the moon that is furthest away from the center of the earth. The word is used to indicate any high point.
Example (as used by John Maddox in What Remains To Be Discovered): “How can we suppose that science has reached its apogee in the twentieth century?”
