Your passion has powered you to incredible success. You should be thankful for it. I am grateful for the passion that you bring to life and to your work.
Your passion fuels your purpose. Your purpose dictates your right decisions. Your right decisions make it easier for you to create your Rules for Living.
You’ve done what most people haven’t. You’ve spent time in introspection, identifying how you can direct the energy of your passion into something purposeful.
Unfortunately, the majority of people have not put any time or effort into introspection where they sit and think about what really matters to them. People avoid this because it’s scary, because they don’t know where to start, and because big thinking can be difficult.
“An hour of effective, precise, hard, disciplined – and integrated thinking can be worth a month of hard work. Thinking is the very essence of, and the most difficult thing to do in business and in life. Empire builders spend hour-after-hour on mental work…while others party. If you’re not consciously aware of putting forth the effort to exert self-guided integrated thinking…if you don’t act beyond your feelings and instead take the path of least resistance, then you give in to laziness, make bad decisions and no longer control your life.” – Kekich Credo #44
But you must spend time in introspection. You must spend time alone in your thoughts, identifying your strengths and weaknesses, listing the obstacles to success in your life, but also listing the great number of opportunities that exist for you to make incredible breakthroughs towards you big goals and dreams. You have more people on your side than you think. You have more skills, abilities, and momentum than you give yourself credit for having.
Many people struggle with knowing what really matters to them. It is because they have not spent the time in introspection. They have not yet figured themselves out.
To do this, it helps to start with your Rules. Know what you will and will not do for success.
Write down what really matters to you. Rank family, friends, hobbies, wealth, health, free time, material goods, travel, and all your relationships. What makes it to the top of the list? What desires do you have that don’t really matter? What is truly under your control? What is possible now? What is the low-hanging fruit in terms of what you can easily achieve? What would you never want to give up? Who are the most important people in your life? How are your relationships with them right now? How much does this matter?
There are many questions that we need to answer to get to the bottom of what really matters in life. When we do this, only then can we start to build our vision of where we want to get to in life. As you build your vision, you’ll begin to realize what must be done on a day-to-day basis to drive progress in these areas. If you want to be the best father you can be, then you need to build everything else around that.
That’s the beauty of life. We are the architects of it. We can design a life of abundant relationships, or we can design a life of stress and chasing material objects.
We are where we are because of the choices we’ve made in the past and the decisions we continue to make today. If you don’t like where you are, sit, think, and figure out better choices to make that will get you closer to the life you want to live and enjoy.
If it is to be, it’s up to me.
It all starts with you sitting down and thinking. Clear your schedule. Find a quiet room with no distractions. Take a pen, some paper, and your favorite beverage. I recommend doing this on a weekend morning, with no Internet or phone calls to distract you. Sit in an area that begets creativity. Do this in your magic time. Let the ideas flow. Draw out a mindmap of all that you want to achieve, and include how the most important relationships in your life fit into this plan.
Then work backwards from three years into the future. Write your vision as if you have achieved what you desire.
When you work back in this way, you’ll identify the exact road map you need to follow for achieving your great goals.
They are locked within you right now. Let them out through introspection.
Take the time. Do this in the right environment. It will lead you to the planning breakthroughs you need if you are not sure what matters in life. Your priorities will be revealed, as will the fast track roadmap for success.
But we can have a dream. We can create a powerful vision. We can work tirelessly towards it every day. And we can leave our own legacy.
