3 Ways to Make Cardio Workouts and Interval Training Better

Am I out of my mind? Three ways to make cardio better? Did Bally the Dog kidnap me and write this email in my place? No, I assure you he did not. (His emails always have more spelling mistakes…he blames his ‘fat paws’. Ha!) Today I’m going to show you how to make cardio workouts and interval training better…

Tip #1 – Crank your favorite tunes!

The other week I had dinner with my old friend, Dr. Marty Gibala from McMaster University (where I did my Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology). Marty is the guy behind some of the most groundbreaking interval training studies in the world, including the “1-Minute Miracle Workout”.

As we ate and enjoyed a drink, Marty told me about his most recent research published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. He and his team had subjects do 30-second sprint intervals while listening to NO music or to high-energy music.

When the subjects listened to music, they exercised harder AND enjoyed the interval training more than when they exercised in silence.

Tip #2 – Less is More…Enjoyable

In a second study, University of South Florida researchers had unfit, overweight men and women do either a hard 20-minute cardio workout or a workout of 30-second intervals. The subjects found interval training to be more enjoyable than the hard cardio workout. And I’ve found the same thing. Interval training is tough for a little bit, but time flies and the workout ends before you know it, especially when you use these free 4-minute workouts.

Tip #3 – Give It Up

The BEST way to improve your cardio workouts is to…stop doing cardio.

Researchers from another study found that “you would have to do five times the amount of moderate cardio to burn the same number of calories in four minutes of bodyweight circuit training.” And in 2012 a study from Canada found that 4 minutes of bodyweight exercise gave you BETTER results than doing 30 minutes of slow cardio.

So give up the cardio and make the switch to short, burst bodyweight interval-style training today. Not only will you get better results, and ENJOY your exercise session, but you’ll also save big bucks. You don’t need a gym membership or any equipment, and you can get all of my 4-minute bodyweight workouts for FREE on DVD today.

PS – Don’t worry about other people…

Comparing yourself to others is the source of 97%* of all unhappiness. Don’t worry about what other people are doing, or wearing, or buying, or eating, or even how they are exercising…

Focus on improving yourself and you’ll improve your lot in life.

Focus on planning ahead to overcome obstacles, rather than reacting.

Be a driver, not a reactionary. Be the cause, not the effect.

You can do it. You can change. Start now. Finish strong.

(*Yes, I made that number up, but I bet it’s close!!!)
