It’s time once again to set the record straight on pairs of words that are commonly confused. Here are examples from print and online sources:

A gala event is a premiere. The adjective meaning first is premier.

Locution- (loh-KYOO-shun)-from the Latin for “speech”-is a style or form of verbal expression, especially as used by a particular person or group.
Example (as used by Tom Wilkinson): “The English locution you are familiar with, the body language and all those sorts of things, are denied you, because Americans don’t talk in that highly nuanced, middle-class [...]
If you’ve been to a “motivational” seminar or heard someone talk about success in, say, the last 10 years, you’ve probably heard the “Bamboo Story.”
The Bamboo Story goes something like this…
“The Bamboo is amazing. You water it and wait. You wait an entire year and nothing appears. No bud, no twig, nothing.
“So you keep watering [...]

To deliquesce- (del-ih-KWES) – from the Latin for “to become liquid” – is to melt away.
