Your biggest roadblock to staying fit is probably that it isn’t fun. I just read a study which found that most overweight folks don’t find exercise enjoyable. Worse, instead of feeling energized, they feel tired after a workout. No wonder it seems to be so hard to lose weight! But, no matter what you have experienced in [...]

The Dirty Secret of Screw-Ups

Here’s something I discovered shortly after launching my business in 2001: Up to a point, customers don’t really mind when something goes wrong. What drives them batty is when they complain and nobody cares. And when you make it clear to everyone in your organization that listening to customers is the Number One job of your [...]

He had been strongly recommended for the job. And so, when I got on the phone with him, I was expecting a sharp, take-charge guy. Instead, I got this: “I’ve been involved in strategically important roles with communications companies for 25 years. Throughout, I’ve focused on my core competencies, building brand recognition and interfaces with key [...]

“Biddable” (BID-uh-bul) – from the Middle English for “to ask/command” – means obedient/easily led. Example (as used by Thomas Sutcliffe in The Independent): “The chaotically organised event proved nothing more than that one charismatic individual can impose his will on a lot of biddable ones.” [Ed. Note: Become a more persuasive writer and speaker... build your [...]

Wind power is already a growing source of alternative energy. But some researchers (probably the same people who predicted we’d be living in bubble cities on the ocean floor by now) are proposing a whole new model. Instead of land-based “wind mills,” they want to send wind turbines up to 30,000 feet in the air [...]

Here is more proof, if any is needed, that proofreaders and copy editors don’t always catch every error. I found all the following examples recently in major national publications. “But worse, it always gets my shackles up when someone tells me I can’t do something.” The word shackles refers to handcuffs or other sorts of [...]

Testimonials

  • “I just wanted to thank you for the daily Word to the Wise section. I have a very large reading vocabulary, which means that although there are numerous words which I more or less understand and can use in context, I am often unsure of pronunciation or exact definition. It is nice to have this reference to provide additional clarity and confidence.”
