Word to the Wise: Tyro

Friday, July 31st, 2009

A “tyro” (TY-roh) – from the Latin for “a young soldier” – is a novice, someone just beginning to learn.

Example (as used by in Paul West in Sporting With Amaryllis): “He was a sensitive, fine soul alert to the pleasures of being green, a tyro, an amateur, unwilling to close his mind before it had been tempted.”

It’s Good to Know: Robot Unemployment

Friday, July 31st, 2009

With 370,000 industrial workers, Japan has the most robots in the world. But even these tireless workers are not immune to the recession. A 40 percent decline in production in Japanese factories means many robots are dormant, while orders for new robots have fallen by almost 60 percent.

The upside (at least if you’re not a robot)? Employers are eliminating robot positions before laying off human workers.

4 Simple Ways to Get People From YouTube to Your Website

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Last week, at least 30 people pointed me to a video of an unconventional wedding on YouTube. With pop music blasting in the background, it showed the wedding party (including the bride) dancing down the aisle in an elaborately choreographed routine. Maybe you’ve seen it. It’s gotten more than 8 million views.

YouTube – coupled with the Internet’s worldwide reach – can make a video go viral almost instantly. Just think of the Susan Boyle phenomenon. Almost 30 million people watched the YouTube video of her performance on “Britain’s Got Talent”!

But what good does a viral video do if you can’t turn it into sales?

The first step is to get the people who view your video to your website. (That’s where you present your offer and entice them to make a purchase.)

Here’s how to do it:

1. Make sure you mention your website address (or business location) during the video.

2. Put up a screenshot at the beginning and end of your video encouraging viewers to visit your site. (You may want to give them something in exchange. For instance, I tell viewers of my videos to visit my website to get a free report.)

3. Stamp the video with a “watermark” of your website address that shows throughout the entire thing.

Until recently, I thought there was nothing more I could do. But then I stumbled on a way to get a direct link to my website within the video – and it turned out to be a real success secret. After all, many people who view your video aren’t going to bother making a note of your website address and typing it into their browser. But if you give them a live hyperlink to your site, they’ll click on it.

And YouTube makes it so easy that I was kicking myself for not having done it sooner.

All you have to do is post your website address in YouTube’s “About This Video” section (being sure to include http:// at the beginning of it). That’s it. You automatically get a live link that allows viewers of your video to be transferred to your site with a click of their mouse.

Once they’re there, your sales copy will persuade them to opt in to your newsletter or purchase your product. And it will be easier than it ever was before, because you will already have made a personal connection with them through your video.

[Ed. Note: Driving traffic to your website is one of the most important things you can do for your business. This November, you'll discover an extremely powerful traffic-generating tactic that can make you more sales than you can imagine. This very strategy produced $5 million in sales for ONE product. The Seeds of a Real Estate Harvest

Friday, July 31st, 2009

I grew up in a small farming town in Alberta, Canada. For 17 years, I was surrounded by farmers – and I never met a single one who’d even consider eating his seeds instead of planting them. They just wouldn’t do it. Neither would they harvest a crop early.

Yet that’s what many real estate investors do when they spend every penny their rental properties make, or when they sell as soon as a property has appreciated to just a fraction of its potential.

Sure, they’re better off than if they had never invested in those properties to begin with. But they’ll never get rich that way.

Instead of spending every penny a property makes for you, save it. Instead of selling as soon as a property has some equity in it, use that equity – and the money it made for you – to buy another property. That’s how you maximize your profits. If it’s making you money, let it keep making you money.

In his bestselling book Automatic Wealth, Michael Masterson says: “Here’s a promise: If you haven’t ever invested in real estate but you start this year, you’ll be glad you did. If you keep investing – buying at least one new property a year (which will be easy once you get going) – you will be a real estate multimillionaire when you retire.” Of course, Michael cautions that you don’t want to buy just any real estate. You have to do your homework and “buy right.”

Invest in real estate the way a farmer invests in his land. Plant your seeds. Let them grow. Keep an eye on them, giving them a bit of water and fertilizer here and there and doing some pest control. Then – when the “season” is ending in that market area or you’ve got a dozen houses that are making you rich – reap your rewards.

Word to the Wise: Quietus

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

“Quietus” (kwy-EE-tus) – from the Latin for “he is at rest” – is a release from life; a final discharge of an obligation or debt.

Example (as used by William Shakespeare in Hamlet’s “To be, or not to be” soliloquy): “For who would bear the whips and scorns of time, / The oppressor’s wrong, / the proud man’s contumely [contempt], / The pangs of despised love, the law’s delay, / The insolence of office and the spurns / That patient merit of the unworthy takes, / When he himself might his quietus make / With a bare bodkin [dagger]?”

It’s Fun to Know: Your Best Chance to Get a Lost Wallet Returned

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

From the annals of unnecessary scientific research and “that’s quite a reach” conclusions…

University of Edinburgh psychologists have determined that you stand the best chance of getting back a lost wallet if there’s a picture of a baby in it. They “planted” 240 wallets on highly trafficked city streets, and were pleasantly surprised to find that almost half of them were returned. Even more surprising, the rate of return appeared to be connected to the photos the researchers had inserted in the wallets. Eighty-eight percent of those with a photo of a baby were returned. Fifty-three percent of those with a photo of a puppy were returned. Forty-eight percent of those with a photo of a happy family were returned. Twenty-eight percent of those with a photo of an elderly couple were returned. And only 15 percent of the wallets with no photos at all were returned.

The researchers believe the overwhelming response to the photos of the baby reflects a compassionate instinct toward helpless infants that evolved in humans to ensure the survival of future generations. (Right!)

The Backyard Detox

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Last week, I was leafing through a natural health publication and couldn’t help but notice that detox foot pads, hydrotherapy, cleansing greens, and detox elixirs filled the majority of the ad spaces.

It’s true that our bodies are exposed to more toxins now than ever. And we do need to be aware of this fact. But drastic, costly methods for detoxing aren’t necessary (or even proven).

Effective detoxification may be as close as your backyard.

Research published in Trends in Endocrinology and Metabolism showed that vitamin D can help increase intracellular levels of the master antioxidant and detoxifier glutathione. In fact, vitamin D is such a powerful detoxifier that the researchers found it even helped escort mercury out of the body. This is especially impressive because mercury is a dangerous heavy metal that’s notorious for being hard to remove.

Unfortunately, more than 50 percent of us are deficient in this essential “D”-toxifying nutrient. To kick up your natural cleansing system, aim for 15-30 minutes of sunlight, 3-5 days a week, or take 2,000-5,000 IU of vitamin D daily.

[Ed Note: Did you know that there's a hidden ingredient in some carb-rich foods that reduces your body's production of glutathione? Learn where it's found and how to avoid it in Kelley Herring's new book series Your Plate, Your Fate.]

Advice From a 97-Year-Old Champion

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

“If you’re not making mistakes, then you’re not doing anything.”

So said John Wooden, the Hall of Fame basketball coach for UCLA who won a record 10 NCAA championships.

So many people do everything they can to avoid making mistakes – yet mistakes are the corrective feedback we need to help us reach our goals. Better to take action and correct mistakes while you’re in motion than to sit idle trying to figure out how not to make a wrong move.

It’s like driving a car. You must always have your hands on the wheel so you can make minor adjustments. You must continually modify and correct your course based upon ongoing feedback.

When you make a mistake and someone points it out to you, don’t say “I’m sorry.” The correct response is: “Thank you for telling me that. I’ll work on it.”

People who see feedback as helpful are grateful to learn what is steering them away from their goals. It may be tough to listen and be open to change – but it’s what the best of the best do.

Yes, you have the option to agree or disagree with the feedback – and you’ll become better at discerning what is helpful and what isn’t the more you practice listening to it. But you’ll never get anywhere if you view mistakes as negative and feedback as undesirable.

My best students LOVE getting my advice – even, as they would say, “raked over the coals.” They beg me to show them their mistakes.

Keep all of this in mind as you go through your day today. Mistakes are nothing to fear. Nor is the feedback that will help you improve.

Word to the Wise: Moxie

“Moxie” (MOK-see) – from the name of a soft drink popular in the 1920s – is courage and determination; aggressive energy.

It’s Good to Know: One Part of the Economy Is on the Upswing

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

In times of economic uncertainty, people look for an escape from their financial worries – and Hollywood magic has become a popular refuge.

A recent study by the National Association of Theatre Owners showed that movie ticket sales were up in the first quarter of 2009, a 9 percent increase over the first quarter of 2008. Why? The trade group says it’s because going to the movies is a relatively inexpensive entertainment option. (They neglected to mention the $5 tub of popcorn.)

11 Natural Methods for Fighting Anxiety

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

It seems like I receive at least one e-mail every day from someone asking about herbs that can treat anxiety and help them sleep.

As a result of the ongoing recession, this problem has become commonplace. According to a poll by the American Psychological Association, 80 percent of respondents reported significant stress because of the economy. And the National Sleep Foundation’s 2009 Sleep in America poll found that nearly one-third of people surveyed weren’t sleeping well due to increased anxiety.

Many are visiting their doctors to get sleeping pills and anti-anxiety medications. However, you don’t have to go the pharmaceutical route. There are plenty of natural alternatives. Exercise, deep sleep, and yoga, for example, have been proven to help many. Meditation and prayer works for others. In addition, there are several over-the-counter supplements to consider.

Kava is one of the most potent anti-anxiety herbs. In a recent study, Australian researchers gave 60 adults with chronic anxiety symptoms either kava or a placebo for one week. The second week, placebo patients were switched to kava and kava patients to the placebo. Anxiety symptoms declined for the patients on the kava extract, as did depression symptoms in some – often within an hour or two after taking it. However, there have been rare reports of liver damage when kava has been used daily. For this reason, I recommend taking kava no more than three days a week.

Another herb I like is passionflower. Its effects (which include relaxation and sleepiness) begin in an hour or two. Passionflower is quite safe, and can be used on the days when kava is not taken.

Ashwagandha is an Ayurvedic herb that many find helpful in easing tension.

Certain amino acids and related compounds are popular for stress relief. These include 5-HTP, GABA, and theanine. I personally have not found GABA to be very effective, although some people really like it. 5-HTP helps to balance mood, reduces tension, and – like theanine – helps with sleep. The timing of these supplements depends on the severity of your anxiety. They can be taken during the day if you are very anxious. But if your symptoms are milder and you just need a natural pill to help you relax after work, they can be taken in the early evening.

If you are still having trouble sleeping, I have formulated an excellent product called Good Night Rx. A capsule is taken 2 to 4 hours before bed on an empty stomach, and the vast majority of users find they get a deeper and more restful sleep with hardly any side effects. Wait at least a half hour after taking Good Night Rx before eating dinner or a late snack.

[Ed. Note: If you are sick of sleepless nights and anxiety because of the recession, now's your chance to do something about it! Break Away From Old Ideas

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Highly creative people tend to have fluid, flexible, adaptive minds. You can see it in three statements they commonly make.

The first is simply “I was wrong.”

Non-creative people are so concerned with being right that all their mental energy is consumed by stonewalling, bluffing, blaming, and denying. If you’re wrong, admit it… and get on to the solution or the next step.

The second is “I made a mistake.”

Non-creative people think it is a sign of weakness to admit to having made a mistake. On the contrary, it is a sign of mental maturity, personal strength, and character. (Remember, everybody makes mistakes every single day.)

The third statement is “I changed my mind.”

It is amazing how many uncomfortable situations non-creative people get into and stay in because they are unwilling or afraid to admit that they’ve changed their minds.

Here are two ways you can break away from those old, limiting ideas and become a more creative thinker.

1. Be willing to admit that you are not perfect, you make mistakes, you are wrong. This is a mark of intelligence and courage.

2. When you get new information, be willing to change your mind. Most of what you know about your business today will change completely in the coming years, so be the first to recognize it.

My 5 Rules for New-Job Success

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Whether you’re entering the workforce for the first time or have years of experience, keep the following in mind when moving into any new position:

  • Spend the first several weeks taking everything in. Be eager and helpful, but don’t be too aggressive and don’t get into arguments or debates. Now is the time to learn everything you can about your new work environment. Much of what you need to learn will be hidden from you if you pose a threat.
  • Networking is extremely important to your career. But – for the reasons stated above – you don’t want to go after the powerful people in your company in a pushy way. In the beginning weeks, make a strong effort to make friends with everybody. Making enemies early on – even with seemingly unimportant people – can cause serious problems later.
  • Come in early and stay late. But not too early or too late. You want to establish a reputation as an enthusiastic employee and a hard worker, not a goody-two-shoes.
  • When you have firmly established good relationships with everyone you work with, gradually increase your efforts – coming in earlier, volunteering for jobs, taking on extra assignments, and setting up information interviews with the movers and shakers.
  • As your performance improves and you start accomplishing major goals for the company, stay humble with your fellow workers. But make sure your boss (and your boss’s boss) knows that you are a superstar in the making.

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

“Bravado” (bruh-VAH-doh) – from the Spanish – is a pretentious, swaggering display of courage.

Example (as used by William Styron in the short story “Rat Beach”): “When I was seventeen, bravado, mingled with what must have been a death wish, made me enlist in the officer-training program of the Marine Corps.”

It’s Fun to Know: Swearing as a Pain Reliever

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Smash your finger with a hammer or slam your knee on a coffee table… and, if you’re like many people, you can’t help but let loose a string of expletives. It turns out the swearing could be beneficial. A new study published in the journal NeuroReport found that spewing out bad language may actually relieve pain.

The researchers asked college students to keep their hands in icy cold water as long as they possibly could. During their “ordeal,” they were told to keep repeating either a swear word of their choice or a neutral word. The “swearers” reported less pain and could stand the water almost a minute longer.

So why does swearing help? The researchers think it might have something to do with the “fight-or-flight” reflex triggered by the brain when we are in danger. This primitive defense mechanism not only makes the heart rate climb (a reaction observed in the students who swore), it makes us less sensitive to pain.

Why I Bought the Same Exact Shoes Twice

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Here’s one company that knows the best person to sell shoes to is… someone who just bought shoes.

About two months ago, I bought a pair of Doc Martens on sale at Zappos.com. They’ve got an extremely shopper-friendly website – and good prices too.

Last week, I received this e-mail:

“Just wanted to let you know, we’ve got just one pair of your shoes remaining in stock. After that, we’ll never have these again.”

I ordered them that minute.

It goes back to Michael Masterson’s concept of the “Buying Frenzy,” which he explained in his book Ready, Fire, Aim:

“If you want to maximize the lifetime value of your new customer, you shouldn’t let him cool off after that first sale. Instead, you should send him an immediate thank-you note, along with a bounce-back promotion that replicates the psychological trappings of the prior purchase and stimulates in him, once again, the desire to buy something from you.”

“This is not about high-pressure selling… but about putting the customer in an environment where he can do what he wants to do: Buy once and then keep buying!”

A Little Negotiating Trick for Real Estate Deals

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

When negotiating to buy a property, I increase my chances of getting the exact deal I want by giving the seller options.

One way I do it is by negotiating the financing terms I want at the same time as I negotiate price.

Let’s say I wanted to buy a certain property for $200,000. If I can convince the seller to provide financing at a reasonable rate, I’d probably be willing to pay 5 percent more just to avoid the hassles and fees involved in finding and securing a lender. To avoid having the seller say “no” to my offer, I would say something like this:

“The best I can do is $200,000 if I have to go to a bank for financing. They’re going to require me to prove the rental income, pay for an appraisal, and do a ton of paperwork to qualify for that loan. So if you’ll accept my $200,000 offer, I will close on the date you want.

“But if you are willing to provide at least 70 percent of the financing, I can offer you $210,000. And I would still be willing to close on the date you want.”

By giving my seller these two options, I make him feel like he is in control of the outcome of our negotiation… even though either one would be a great deal for me.

Too Much Enthusiasm

Monday, July 27th, 2009

Years ago, while I was living in California, there was a saying: “Curb your enthusiasm.”

It’s an important saying to know when doing business. Sometimes you can get so excited about what you’re doing or offering that you make foolish decisions.

Happens all the time.

My friend Kim Wood, an NFL strength coach for 27 years, points out: “An animal on the attack is cautious almost to the point of cowardice.”

Fascinating, eh?

Picture a cheetah running 70 mph after a deer or antelope. He doesn’t appear to be cautious at all. Yet prior to that 70 mph burst, the cheetah had very carefully stalked his prey and scoped out the terrain. He does not simply take off on a sprint as soon as he’s hungry.

So the key to enthusiasm is balance. Same with confidence.

There’s confidence and over-confidence. There’s enthusiasm and over-enthusiasm.

Conversely, there is under-enthusiasm and under-confidence. I think most people who are struggling fall into the “under” category. They don’t need to curb their enthusiasm. They need to unleash it.

Enthusiasm for what you do and what you’re attempting to do is a cornerstone of success. Without it, you cannot accomplish much. As Emerson wrote, “Nothing great was ever accomplished without enthusiasm.”

At the same time, being too enthusiastic, too confident, and too positive can hurt you. It’s a matter of balance.

When I was studying shuai jiao kung fu years ago, Dr. Daniel Weng once told me, “A strength overextended becomes a weakness.”

How true.

And lest you think this applies only to martial arts – think again. It applies to everything you do in life. It also applies to every virtue.

Even love.

The “A Prospect” Advantage

Monday, July 27th, 2009

No matter what you’re selling, your job will be a lot easier of you target your marketing efforts to “A” prospects. By that I mean pre-qualified buyers – people who have already purchased what you’re selling. Ideally, they’ve done it recently (and often).

“B” prospects are people who have shown an interest in what you’re selling – maybe by calling a toll-free number, sending an e-mail, or writing a letter to ask for more information. They’re interested, and they’ve acted on that interest. That’s great.

But they’re not nearly as valuable to you as “A” prospects.

Where do you find these primo prospects?

First, go to your own list of buyers. Always target them when you create a new product similar to one they’ve bought from you before. Then go directly to a company that has successfully sold products like yours. Rent their mailing lists. Their buyers should respond well to your offer.
