“Sorry, but we’ve got to let you go.”

Employers are desperate to keep their companies afloat these days. So they’re slashing the fat.

Think your job is secure?

Don’t be so sure.

Cal State economics professor Sung Won Sohn projects that job losses could top 800,000 per month.

The Boring Investment

By Eric Roseman

As the global economy started to come tumbling down and most of the world’s financial “experts” were exposed for what they really are, the wealthy – and not-so-wealthy – flocked to gold.

The value of gold isn’t about governments, promises, or trust. It’s about stability. Instead of the classic “In God We Trust” prayer you see on most money, some gold coins were actually minted with “I Will Maintain Purchasing Power.”

Gold has maintained its value for thousands of years. As Bill Bonner points out, “Gold buys [at least] as much bread in 2009 as it did in AD 9.” To quote Ernst (one of the Sovereign Society’s Austrian banking contacts), “In ancient Rome, an ounce of gold would buy a man a tunic. Today, an ounce of gold buys you a nice suit. See, not so much has changed.”

That stability has given gold a reputation for being a boring investment… most of the time. During a crisis, it spikes in value, sometimes doubling overnight.

Does gold make up a portion of your portfolio? If not, you should consider adding it to your investing mix.

“Cancer is a word, not a sentence.”

John Diamond

Enough of the Grim Statistics

By Melanie Segala

Breast cancer. The very words strike fear into women everywhere. And for good reason. In 2008, according to the National Cancer Institute, an estimated 182,460 women were diagnosed with and 40,480 women died of the disease.

With such alarming statistics, it’s tragic that most women just wait until a self-exam or mammogram shows an unusual lump in the breast. By then, the cancer has taken hold and it becomes a life or death battle for survival.

That’s why I did a double-take when I read Dr. James LaValle’s article, “Breast Cancer – Real Prevention,” that appeared in the November 4 issue of Total Health Breakthroughs. His advice could save countless lives if it is read and understood by women everywhere.

As Dr. LaValle explained in the article, “Most breast cancer is determined by how estrogen is metabolized in the body and whether it is balanced by adequate levels of progesterone.

Knowing this – and taking the appropriate steps – means that you may never be involved in this fight for your life. Because with the proper testing and nutrition, the cancer won’t have the opportunity to develop in the first place.

In brief, here’s what you need to pass on to your mother, your sisters, and your friends…

Have your estradiol, estrogen metabolites, and progesterone levels tested. If you have a progesterone deficiency, you are at least four times more likely to develop breast cancer. If testing shows you are deficient in this hormone, there are several bio-identical – not synthetic – progesterone creams available without a prescription that can be recommended by a healthcare professional.

Estrogen testing will let you know whether your body is breaking down estradiol, your primary estrogen, into safe or dangerous metabolites. For instance, 2OH (one of the metabolites of estradiol) actually inhibits breast cancer. But 4OH and 16OH increase your risks, so you don’t want to see those levels elevated.

The good news is that you can encourage your body to make more good estrogen while getting rid of the bad stuff simply by maintaining healthy gut flora and modifying your diet to include more antioxidant-rich and omega-3 foods and fewer carbs. As Laura LaValle, nutrition counselor and Director of Dietetics Nutrition at LaValle Metabolic Institute, explains, the insulin resistance and inflammation caused by carbs significantly increase your risk of diabetes, heart disease, and breast cancer.

You might not be aware that your thyroid plays a role in breast health too. If you have an underactive thyroid or thyroid antibodies (autoimmune thyroiditis), your body may not be making enough NK (natural killer) cells – the immune cells that search out cancer cells and destroy them. That’s why it’s vitally important to have your thyroid checked regularly.

This brings me to an important question: Did you realize that it is in your power to dramatically reduce your risk of breast cancer by balancing your hormones and eating a nutritious diet? If you’re like me, the answer is no. I believed it was fate or genetics that determined whether or not I would be faced with a breast cancer crisis.

And, like millions of women, I thought that a yearly mammogram (and waiting for the bad news) was the most I could do to protect myself from this horrific disease. But not anymore. Thanks to what I learned from Dr. LaValle, hormone and thyroid testing will now be part of my yearly checkup.

I can’t even imagine how many lives could have been saved if women had been properly educated about real breast cancer prevention by the medical establishment and media. But we don’t need to wait any longer. We can carry this message to women everywhere, and together we can reverse the killer statistics.

Let’s put breast cancer behind us, once and for all.

How to Surprise and Delight Your Customers

By Suzanne Richardson

If your goal is to satisfy your customers, you’re aiming too low. Instead, aim to over-deliver on your promises.

Roy Flora, Group President of Microtel Inns & Suites, over-delivers by randomly giving away free stays at his hotels. Better yet, he encourages staff members to do the same. It’s one reason that Microtel has ranked at the top of the J.D. Power & Associates North America hotel guest satisfaction survey seven years in a row.

Internet clothing company Zappos over-delivers by not only offering free standard shipping… but by getting those orders to customers overnight instead of in the four to five business days they promise.

Clothing retailer L.L. Bean accepts the return of any clothing – worn or unworn, damaged or not – for years after it was bought.

And here at ETR, we are constantly thinking of new ways to over-deliver. During the past two Christmas holiday seasons, for instance, we’ve given out special advice-packed reports and never-before-seen interviews with our expert contributors. At every Bootcamp, we put together an exciting get-together – like our “sock hop” (complete with costumes and an Elvis impersonator) this past November. Plus, we offer exclusive VIP events – like our Internet Money Club annual roundtable – to our top customers.

“Your customer-service policy should be bend-over-backward,” says Michael Masterson. This means “adding features and benefits on a regular basis that surprise and delight your customers. It means getting them accustomed to being delighted every time they buy a product from you.”

What can you do to surprise and delight your customers? In a world that’s overpowered by poor service, it doesn’t take much. Simply doing something small – like answering your customer service line, in person, on the first or second ring – is enough to make your customer feel cared about. Or take a look at Microtel, Zappos, L.L. Bean, and other companies reputed for great service… and see how you can adapt their customer-service policies.

[Ed. Note: When we dreamed up our Secrets to Selling on the Internet conference, we knew it would knock the socks off anyone who attended. It's an unprecedented chance to learn the top sales secrets of a bona fide copywriting superstar. Secrets that could help you take your business to the next level... wow your boss (and give you serious job security - a must these days!)... or get you snapped up by practically any employer. Side-of-the Road Marketing

By Jason Holland

"I'll build your website – only $895! Call 800-XXX-XXXX."

No, it wasn't the copy for a classified ad or a posting on a freelance job site. It was a "bandit" sign, stuck in a grassy highway divider down the street from my house.

At ETR, we embrace multi-channel marketing, but you have to choose channels that are going to reach your target market.

"Garage Sale" signs at busy intersections get noticed by folks who are out for a Sunday drive. Billboards on the highway do a good job of drawing traffic to restaurants and attractions. And at election time, roadside signs are fairly effective at drumming up support for candidates and issues.

But if you're marketing a technical service like Web design, you should be posting on CraigsList or Elance.com, not a street corner. You could also place pay-per-click (PPC) ads on Google, so that when people search for "Web design services" your ads will pop up on the results page.

The idea is to advertise through channels that will get the attention of your prospects.

In their book Changing the Channel: 12 Easy Ways to Make Millions for Your Business, http://changingthechannelbook.com/promos/102808_etr/ Michael Masterson and MaryEllen Tribby point out, for example, that an 80-year-old grandmother almost certainly doesn't spend a lot of time with a computer. So if your target market is older women, it wouldn't make sense to focus your marketing online.

Identify your target market and do some research. Then make some educated guesses about the kind of advertising that is likely to appeal to them. Telemarketing? E-mail? Banner ads on websites? Print ads in newspapers?

Test your best guesses, track your results... and run with the winners.

It's Good to Know: Real Pirates

Piracy on the high seas, in particular off the coast of Somalia, has been on the rise in recent years. Typically, a small group of pirates in a speedboat, armed with automatic weapons, boards a cargo ship, luxury cruise liner, or other vessel and holds the ship and crew for ransom.

There were 293 incidents in 2008, with 11 crew members killed. One high-profile case that you may have heard about in the news involved a large Saudi oil tanker.

In response to this alarming trend, United States maritime academies that train merchant sailors have added anti-piracy courses. Students learn such skills as high-speed emergency maneuvers, ship security, and the use of high-pressure water hoses. (Seaman are prohibited by law from carrying firearms.)

Word to the Wise: Sardonic

Something that's "sardonic" (sar-DON-ik) - from the Greek for "derisive" - is scornful or mocking.

Example (as used by Ian McEwan in Amsterdam) "Clive gave a sardonic account of a publicly subsidized 'concert' in a nearly deserted church hall, in which the legs of a piano were repeatedly struck with the broken neck of a violin for over an hour."

Finding Happiness and Hope in Tough Times

Feeling down because of the current state of the economy? Michael Masterson presented a simple way to overcome those feelings of despair in his article “Defeating Depression Before It Defeats You.” ETR readers took comfort in his words. Here’s some of what they had to say:

“I have always admired Michael’s writings & this is another needed message he has delivered. Thank you.”

S. Ford

“Thank you so much for your wonderful article. It was so very helpful and accurate. Self Esteem is exactly the crux of the problem.”

Luann C.

“Good article!

“I have been out of work for almost a year. I have no financial assets anymore, and I am 63 years old. But I work out every day, climb a mountain every weekend, and I have not given up looking for a job. Sure, lots of people would say a 63-year-old guy is not going to find a good job again. I say they are morons!

“Anyone in this predicament should stay active (exercise). Keep the blood pumping and maybe the brain will come up with a new idea.

“Over the course of the last year, I have learned so much more about business (Ready, Fire, Aim) and Internet marketing in particular that I just know it will pay off eventually.

“Thanks for continuing to inspire me!”

Bill M.

“Great Pep Talk!

“At 66, I’ve lost my retirement and nearly all of my savings. I am still hoping to do something productive. I am working on my AWAI copywriting program, and hope to finish next month. The bumps in life can be disturbing, but you have to keep going. Try to smile whenever you can. I find it helps!”
