Chinese researchers at Beihang University have been looking at the problem of how to feed astronauts (known as taikonauts in China) during long space missions. And they have come up with a novel solution: silkworms.
To survive for years in space, the taikonauts will have to raise animals and plants for food. But chickens, cows, or fish would take up too much room and resources – not to mention make a huge mess.
Enter silkworms. They breed quickly, and require little in the way of care and feeding. Plus, they’re nutritious, full of protein and essential amino acids. You can even make a jam with the cocoons.
The scientists estimate that an adult would have to eat 170 silkworms per day to meet their protein needs.
