Sadly, true. However if you look at conservative vs liberal the numbers are dramatically different. There is a strong conservative movement within the Republican party; none within the Democrat party. We have had mostly liberal Republicans running the show, except for Reagan who had to deal with Democrat majorities in Congress.

The biggest reasons why the republicans outspent the democrats were two presidents - Reagan and Bush.

Bush had a republican controlled congress and Reagan had a democratically controlled congress.

But no one can dispute that most of the spending in the 80's was because of bills that Reagan helped push through congress.

I agree with the coments of Sutton. A lot of factors are at work besides the role of a president. In fact, Congress controls the money.

Perhaps too much emphasis on the President's role. How about relating to what party was in Congress or the effects of war, natural disasters, etc.?

Who Makes the U.S. Budget Deficit Worse - Democrats or Republicans? The real answer is both.

ETR is usually good about being informative, so I would have expected a little more insight than the commonly accepted fiction that the U.S. only has two political parties. Libertarians also win elections, and their record at reducing budget deficits is amazing compared to the Demopublicans or Republicrats (they are so much alike, who can tell?). People interested in learning more about the Libertarian Party (the party the media won't let you know about) should go to www.lp.org. I'm sure Barr would make a better President than either Obama or McCain (Barr is the only candidate on the ballot in Texas, so he's almost guaranteed to win at least one State).
