Doctrinaire

Something that’s “doctrinaire” (dok-truh-NARE) - from the French - is impractical, merely theoretical.

Example (as used by Lisa Margonelli in a New York Times review of Bottlemania by Elizabeth Royte): “Partway through her undoctrinaire book, Royte, a lifelong fan of tap water, refills her old plastic water bottle, reflecting that ‘what once seemed so simple and natural, a drink of water, is neither.’”
