There are 65 million pet dogs in this country; 77.7 million cats.
- 39% of U.S. households have a dog, 34% have a cat, and 62% have a pet of some sort.
- Last year, dog owners spent an average of $33 on toys, $53 on treats, and $52 on miscellaneous pet supplies.
- It is estimated that pet owners will spend a total of $31 billion on their furry little friends this year, up from $17 billion in 1994.
I’ve seen how successful the pet business can be in retail, in wholesale, and in direct mail. Like all industries, it has its problems and secrets. But as the baby boomers get older, the market will expand. I’m working with my sister, DF (an avid pet lover), on her own little pet-friendly business. If you or a loved one loves animals, you might think about it too.
